Vader stomped into the classroom, slamming the door so hard behind him that it cracked across the middle.

"Today I will give you your midterm assignment," he snapped, cloak swirling around him as he paced. Well, half of a raggedy cloak. If it looked like it had been cut up by a child...yeah.

"The master-apprentice system of education has long been traditional in my galaxy. The Jedi used it--" his tone was laced with scorn as his helmet swiveled, looking at various students, "and my own Sith still use it. We will be following in the Sith tradition."

He pulled a piece of paper from his desk. "I have paired you up into master and apprentice teams. Throughout the coming weeks, you will work together. Masters, your goal is to train your apprentices to a level of usefulness in a skill of your choice. Apprentices, your goal is to become better than your master at that skill and ultimately become the master. You must provide a united front to the rest of the world while seeking to undermine each other at every turn. Next class--which is after the midterm break, how fortunate for you--you will report to me about the weaknesses and strengths of your partner and how you would hypothetically use them to gain the upper hand in your relationship."

And if Vader sounded a bit bitter about this particular arrangement, well, he was.

"I have heard about the master-slave exercise in the Ethics classes last year," he growled, voice heavy with menace. "This is a completely different concept and anyone who tries to turn this into non-hypothetical exploitation will be answering to me personally. You will be wishing for detention when I am finished with you." He made sure to look at every student as he said that. There would be no misinterpretation of his intentions in this.

He turned his attention to the paper in his gloved right hand. "Listen for your names. I will only be saying them once."

"Think I could teach you to do my homework for me till I can type, or use a pen without a thumb?"

Jake grinned. "Maybe. What's in it for me?"

"Nothing. I'm the master, remember?" she asks.

But she's also a stick, so she says, "You can do it all at the Perk?"

Jake brightened. This sounded like a pretty good deal. "All right. Which classes have you got, o'master of mine?"

"This, Film and Lit and Creative Writing. See, easy workload and everything," she says, nodding a lot.

Jake eyed her. "I'm not going to write the story for you."

"No, it's okay, I can dictate," she says. "Besides, I just had to have Alec eat my homework because it sucked and I had to rewrite it. I have work invested. Don't ask me how that happened."

"Okay," Jake agreed. He'd be more interested in knowing why Jaye was a stick figure anyway, if he was going to start asking things. "What's Film and Lit about, anyway?"

"It's like, movie versions of books and the differences between them and stuff," she says. "I'm still waiting for Snakes on a Plane."

"What? You haven't had Snakes on a Plane yet?" Jake gave her a horrified look.

"I've seen it!" she protests. "But I haven't read the novelization and I don't feel like reading if I'm not forced to!"

Jake folded his arms at her. "Uncultured heathen."

"Hey, apprentices don't get to call their masters names, even if they are uncultured heathens."

"We don't?" Jake frowned at Jaye. "What about; You're an uncultured heathen, Master?"

"Just call me Master Uncultured Heathen," she decides.
