Vader stomped into the classroom, slamming the door so hard behind him that it cracked across the middle.

"Today I will give you your midterm assignment," he snapped, cloak swirling around him as he paced. Well, half of a raggedy cloak. If it looked like it had been cut up by a child...yeah.

"The master-apprentice system of education has long been traditional in my galaxy. The Jedi used it--" his tone was laced with scorn as his helmet swiveled, looking at various students, "and my own Sith still use it. We will be following in the Sith tradition."

He pulled a piece of paper from his desk. "I have paired you up into master and apprentice teams. Throughout the coming weeks, you will work together. Masters, your goal is to train your apprentices to a level of usefulness in a skill of your choice. Apprentices, your goal is to become better than your master at that skill and ultimately become the master. You must provide a united front to the rest of the world while seeking to undermine each other at every turn. Next class--which is after the midterm break, how fortunate for you--you will report to me about the weaknesses and strengths of your partner and how you would hypothetically use them to gain the upper hand in your relationship."

And if Vader sounded a bit bitter about this particular arrangement, well, he was.

"I have heard about the master-slave exercise in the Ethics classes last year," he growled, voice heavy with menace. "This is a completely different concept and anyone who tries to turn this into non-hypothetical exploitation will be answering to me personally. You will be wishing for detention when I am finished with you." He made sure to look at every student as he said that. There would be no misinterpretation of his intentions in this.

He turned his attention to the paper in his gloved right hand. "Listen for your names. I will only be saying them once."

"Like a turtle?" was her immediate, excited response. Sure, she'd been a turtle already, but being able to turn into one at will would be an awesome, albeit not very helpful, minion superpower to have.

"I don't think she ever changed me into a turtle," John said. "I think I was a snake once."

"A snake could be cool, too," Turtle agreed. "Much quicker than a turtle, believe me."

Next time she turned into an actual turtle, Turtle hoped she had rocket jets.

John fell quiet to think some more.

"Ever played a Wii before?"

"Ooh, no, not yet!"

At least, Turtle hoped John meant the gaming system because, if not, this could end up being very embarrassing for the both of them.

"I have one!" John said, excitement in his voice. "I could teach you that? See if you can get better at me in the games?"

Turtle nodded. "That's an awesome idea!" Learning to play lots of video games really well for a class? Heck yeah!

"Cool!" Okay, even John liked this idea. "I'm in 238. Wanna try to get together for some Wii sometime this week?"

"Sure! I'm on the second floor, too, 210, so maybe we can just keep an eye on each other for when we're both around not doing anything else?"

"Works for me," he said with a nod. "You can stop in anytime I'm there or I'll come get you or something. If I'm not there, my girlfriend usually is and she's friendly...like. She'll let you in the room if you say I sent you."

"Friendly...like?" That made Turtle arch a slightly skeptical eyebrow.

"Aeryn's...special in her own way?" John shrugged. "She's friendly...like."

Turtle drew in a breath. "Okay." If having to deal with potentially scary girlfriends was part of being an apprentice, so be it.

"Great!" John offered his hand. "I don't know if we're supposed to shake on it but why not?"

Turtle's handshake was, as always, very firm, very professional-like. "It's a deal!
