Chess Club [5PM FHT]

Ami was very very nervously waiting for those who signed up to come into the appropriate classroom. She has gotten some soda and juice as well as chips and cookies. Her computer is set up and she has some handouts. There are also several chess boards up.

When everyone shows up, she starts speaking.

"Welcome everyone. This is Chess Club. You do not need to know how to play to join." She nodded to Aziraphale. "Our adviser doesn't. Yet." She grinned.

"Today is really just to get to know each other and such, but i do have several chess programs on the lap-top for people to look at and some handouts explaining the history of chess." She gestured to the handouts.

"Um, that is all from me..."

"Hey" Ami said in greeting. "Want a handout?"

"Yeah." Billy said. "That sounds good. How long have you been playing?"

"Since i was about 3, so almost a dozen years" Ami replied, handing him a handout. "My Grandfather taught me and i would play with him and his friends."

"Did you win?" he asked, skimming the hand out.

"Sometimes." Ami said modestly. "Most times." she admitted, blushing. "They humoured me, knowing i had no one else to interact with."

"Now see aren't you glad you came here?" Billy smiled.

"Yes, actually."

"So, how's this work?"

"Well, there are two sides. Black and white, there are pieces. They all move differently. You move your pieces, your opponent moves theirs." She picked up a king and twisted it in her hands. "The goal is to take your opponent's king. In the process you take all the other pieces too."

Turtle plopped down in front of a board, red side, and wondered if anyone was up to a match while trying not to be all eye rolly and gaggy over Billy'n'Ami.

After surreptitiously listening to Ami explain the rules to Billy, and doing his best to memorize them, and finishing his snacks, Sokka came over to what's-her-name-who-always-fights-with-Twinboy-in-Science!-class. He grabbed the chair across from her, spun it around backwards, and sat down straddling it, with his arms resting on the chair's back.

"So!" he said. "Let's chess this thing!"

Turtle grinned at him a little. "Feeling like losing today, I take it?"

Sokka smirked. "Psssht. You wish!" He smiled confidently, and then looked around worriedly. "You, uh... played much before?"

Turtle tried to read that worried look, wondering if she should build up that she was really, really good to intimidate him a little. "I've just learned this last year," she admitted, "but I picked it up quick. You?"

"Yeah, I totally chess all the time," Sokka declared confidently, and then shrugged. "Be gentle," he added in a small, pathetic voice.

Turtle grinned. "Anyone who's really 'totally chess all the time' knows that there's no such thing as gentle in chess. You want the first move?"

"Hmmm..."

Sokka stared down at the board in intense concentration. He bit his lip, and looked at pieces from a few different angles. He almost touched a few different pieces, but changed his mind. He tapped his chin with a finger. Then, and only then, he picked up a pawn and moved it forward one space.

There was only a brief hesitation before Turtle chose the king's side knight and hooked it swiftly up.

Turtle idly nudged the pawn in front of her king side rook forward a spot.

Sokka's day? Has been made. Oh, and the chess thing looks fun, too.
