Chess Club [5PM FHT]

Ami was very very nervously waiting for those who signed up to come into the appropriate classroom. She has gotten some soda and juice as well as chips and cookies. Her computer is set up and she has some handouts. There are also several chess boards up.

When everyone shows up, she starts speaking.

"Welcome everyone. This is Chess Club. You do not need to know how to play to join." She nodded to Aziraphale. "Our adviser doesn't. Yet." She grinned.

"Today is really just to get to know each other and such, but i do have several chess programs on the lap-top for people to look at and some handouts explaining the history of chess." She gestured to the handouts.

"Um, that is all from me..."

"Since i was about 3, so almost a dozen years" Ami replied, handing him a handout. "My Grandfather taught me and i would play with him and his friends."

"Did you win?" he asked, skimming the hand out.

"Sometimes." Ami said modestly. "Most times." she admitted, blushing. "They humoured me, knowing i had no one else to interact with."

"Now see aren't you glad you came here?" Billy smiled.

"Yes, actually."

"So, how's this work?"

"Well, there are two sides. Black and white, there are pieces. They all move differently. You move your pieces, your opponent moves theirs." She picked up a king and twisted it in her hands. "The goal is to take your opponent's king. In the process you take all the other pieces too."

"You make it sound simple. I always heard it was supposed to be really complicated."

"It is complicated to be good at it. It is very simple to learn how to play."

"Okay," Billy said, looking at her. "Teach me."

"Very well." Ami replied with a slight bow. Picking each piece up in turn, she explained the rules (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess#Rules) of the game. how each piece moved, who did what when and how the end-conditions were met.

"Okay," Billy listened carefully. "So, who goes first?"

"White. Or red, or whichever color is not black." Ami replied. She picked up two pawns, oneof each color and put her hands behind her back. "Pick a hand."

Sokka was totally not standing behind her, pointing at her shoulder and mouthing "the white one's over here" at Billy.

Well, okay, maybe he was. But he did it without getting any cookie crumbs on her.

Billy managed not to smirk and picked the hand Sokka had pointed to.

Ami brought the hands back in front of her and opened them up. "OK, you get the white side, you go first."

"Oookay." Billy concentrated. And moved his pawn.

Ami moved her pawn as well. "We are doing this without the clock by the way." she said as waited for his next move.

"There's supposed to be a clock?" Billy asked, before moving another pawn.

"Every move is timed, in competition. But this is just for fun." Ami moved her knight.

"Ah." Billy nodded, and moved one of his previously moved pawns to block her knight.

Ami smiled at his block. "Very good." She moved her knight in a different direction.

"Thank you." Billy moved one of his own kights to exploit the breach.

Ami let her bishop out, he went in a nice diagonal line and threatened Billy's newly free knight.

Billy frowned and sent a pawn to keep the bishop busy, if only for a move.
