Forensic Science, Wednesday 2/14, 5th period

There were wee heart lollipops alongside the lab coats this week as the students filed into the Danger shop. Abby was sitting on one of the lab counters, her pigtails held up with bright red fuzzy ties.

"Happy Valentines Day, guys! Eat your suckers during the lecture because you are not going to want to take them into the practical this week." Grinning at the students, she clapped her hands. "This week we're going to be using the forensic skills you've learned to find out what happened at a crime scene. The only catch is that you won't be the only people there this week. You'll be dealing with other departments, people who will be in charge, people who might mess up your crime scene. As always, you want to figure how what happened to the victim, but this week you're going to learn how to deal with firemen and cops. Cooperation is key, guys. You're an important part of the team so don't let them walk all over you...but don't get too uppity. They can throw you off the crime scene. Today that'll mean you get a lower grade but in the field it'll mean that you can't do your job and evidence could get lost or destroyed while they wait for a replacement."

Passing out handouts and messenger bags to each of the students, Abby talked a little about the tools that they'd find inside. A camera for crime scene photos, several evidence bags and vials, notebook and pens, and most importantly, identification. "Crime scenes can be like circuses and being the lab geek means that not everyone at the scene will know who you are. Unless you want to be tossed into the back of a police car, keep your ID on you at all times."

Opening the door of the lab, she ushered the students through. Instead of walking into the crime scene like usual, the scene was set outdoors. They stood in front of a burnt out shell of a house, still smoking in places as NPC firefighters crawled over it. The stench of burning wood was heavy in the air as Abby directed them to three firefighters who were waiting near the front door.

"Go get 'em!"

[ooc: OCD up! Go ahead and play!]

Annette pushed her firefighter goggle like glasses back up on her nose and hooked her thumbs through her red suspenders at her waist. She chewed some bubblegum as she waited for the students to arrive, popping bubbles and maintaining her authoritive stance with her booted feet braced apart.

Every now and then she would rock back on her heels and snap her suspenders. She did wish there was a firefighter dog though. She could really go for one of those.

Zack came up to Annette. "I'm here to see the body."

"S'that right? Well buddy-boy, I'm here to see your ID first." Annette lowered her voice a little, you know, to appear more stern.

Zack unclipped his ID from his coat and handed it over to Annette.

She took it from him and seemed to study it for a good half minute before she handed it back. "Yep, it's you. Now, what kind of shoes you got on?" Annette's eyes scanned over him. "And put this on." She handed him a turnout coat. (http://www.lummiislandfire.com/images/coat.jpg)

"Boots," he said, pulling the coat on.

"Good. Got some smarts about you. Okay, let's head in. Stay behind me and don't touch anything, got it? But you can ask me anything you want."

Annette turned around and walked through the door. The smoke was still pretty thick, but not too bad, not enough that he should wear a mask or anything.

"Watch your footing, young man."

"Do you have any idea what started the fire?" Zack asked as he followed Annette.

"We're pretty sure the deceased was smoking in his bed, but you'll be better at determining that when you see the room."

She glanced over her shoulder at him and frowned suddenly. "Hey! Look out!" Annette threw herself against him, pinning him back against the wall as plank from above started to fall, sending wet, mushy soot and ashes scattering over the both of them.

Pushing her goggles back into place, she stepped back and looked him over head to foot. "You okay?" He most likely was, but he was really dirty looking now. Black stuff clinging to his hair and everything.

Mac stared at Annette for a moment before making her way over.

"That's a different look for you," she commented.

Annette gave her a crooked grin. "My firefighter fashion statement."

Then she cleared her voice and hooked a thumb over her shoulder. "Suppose you want in the house to do your lookin' around?" Real authoritive like.

Mac shrugged. "Cute look," she remarked.

"And yeah, much as I would rather not see dead things, the class does call for it."

Re: Firefighters

[identity profile] misshargrove.livejournal.com 2007-02-14 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
She grinned again. But then Annette the firefighter took charge. "All right, miss, I'll be needing to see your ID and you need to be fitted with the proper clothing. What kind of shoes you got on?"

Re: Firefighters

Mac pulled out the ID, and wriggled a converse encased foot around.

"That okay?" she asked.

Annette looked down at her shoes then at the ID. "Afraid not, young lady. Best be getting the proper gear on or you won't be entering this house." She handed back the ID and said, "Boots. Sturdy ones. And here," she handed her a turnout coat (http://www.lummiislandfire.com/images/coat.jpg) to put on.

"Better hussle."

There was a slight raised eyebrow at being referred to as 'young lady' by Annette, but she smirked and nodded anyway.

"Sure thing," Mac replied, taking the coat. "Seeya later, Annette."

"I'll be waiting right here, missy!" Annette chuckled low, loving her role as firefighter.

Billy attatched his ID to his jacket and approached, clipboard, evidence bags and latex gloves at the ready.

He sure didn't remember Barbeque chewing bubblegum, but to each their own he supposed.

"Bit a mess huh." he greeted her.

Re: Firefighters

[identity profile] misshargrove.livejournal.com 2007-02-15 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Annette looked at Billy and popped a bubble, then she leaned close to get a good look at his ID. "What kind of shoes you wearing and that's not the right kind of coat. You need a turnout coat. Want me to lend you one, or you got your own?"

Re: Firefighters

[identity profile] l1ttle-billy.livejournal.com 2007-02-15 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
"I'd appreciate that yeah." Billy nodded. "And later when we're not in charector I need to apologize for monday."

Re: Firefighters

[identity profile] misshargrove.livejournal.com 2007-02-15 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
She looked left, then right, then leaned towards him. "This really the right, Billy?" She was waiting him to break out in song. And while she was doing that, she handed over a proper turnout coat.

Re: Firefighters

[identity profile] l1ttle-billy.livejournal.com 2007-02-15 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Billy donned the coat. "I got bitten by a Gremlin." he explained. "Spent the next few hours thinking I was a very strange performance artist named Andy Kaufman."

"Ah, yeah, Ami explained all that to me. Just wanted to make sure it was you now. The normal you. And you look like and talk like the normal you, so I'll believe it." She flashed him a quick grin. "Glad you are okay. Now, lets get to this, shall we?"

She turned and entered the house. "Watch your step now, lots of debris and burned yucky stuff. Got any questions for me?"

Re: Firefighters

[identity profile] l1ttle-billy.livejournal.com 2007-02-15 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
"What time was the fire reported? And who called it in?"

Re: Firefighters

[identity profile] misshargrove.livejournal.com 2007-02-15 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
"About two hours ago. And were not rightly sure about that. Possibly the cat before it killed over and became a crispy critter. You should know though, all the windows were open." She glanced over her shoulder at him. "All of them."

Annette suddenly heard the tell tale signs of creaking and she looked up just in time to shove Billy back against the wall, pinning him there as more of the ceiling fell in. Black soot and ashes and wet yucky stuff rained down upon them, covering them almost head to foot.

"Sorry about that, you okay?" She asked, pushing off him.
