Forensic Science, Wednesday 2/14, 5th period

There were wee heart lollipops alongside the lab coats this week as the students filed into the Danger shop. Abby was sitting on one of the lab counters, her pigtails held up with bright red fuzzy ties.

"Happy Valentines Day, guys! Eat your suckers during the lecture because you are not going to want to take them into the practical this week." Grinning at the students, she clapped her hands. "This week we're going to be using the forensic skills you've learned to find out what happened at a crime scene. The only catch is that you won't be the only people there this week. You'll be dealing with other departments, people who will be in charge, people who might mess up your crime scene. As always, you want to figure how what happened to the victim, but this week you're going to learn how to deal with firemen and cops. Cooperation is key, guys. You're an important part of the team so don't let them walk all over you...but don't get too uppity. They can throw you off the crime scene. Today that'll mean you get a lower grade but in the field it'll mean that you can't do your job and evidence could get lost or destroyed while they wait for a replacement."

Passing out handouts and messenger bags to each of the students, Abby talked a little about the tools that they'd find inside. A camera for crime scene photos, several evidence bags and vials, notebook and pens, and most importantly, identification. "Crime scenes can be like circuses and being the lab geek means that not everyone at the scene will know who you are. Unless you want to be tossed into the back of a police car, keep your ID on you at all times."

Opening the door of the lab, she ushered the students through. Instead of walking into the crime scene like usual, the scene was set outdoors. They stood in front of a burnt out shell of a house, still smoking in places as NPC firefighters crawled over it. The stench of burning wood was heavy in the air as Abby directed them to three firefighters who were waiting near the front door.

"Go get 'em!"

[ooc: OCD up! Go ahead and play!]

"About two hours ago. And were not rightly sure about that. Possibly the cat before it killed over and became a crispy critter. You should know though, all the windows were open." She glanced over her shoulder at him. "All of them."

Annette suddenly heard the tell tale signs of creaking and she looked up just in time to shove Billy back against the wall, pinning him there as more of the ceiling fell in. Black soot and ashes and wet yucky stuff rained down upon them, covering them almost head to foot.

"Sorry about that, you okay?" She asked, pushing off him.

Billy was in the middle of noting the windows being open. She'd been sure to emphasize that so he figured it was important.

He was caught off guard by the shoving. "Uh, yeah fine." he assured her. Fortunately I'm not squeamish." And that the uniform is decidedly not sexy. "Fire went through the whole building apparently?"

Annette nodded, "The whole house. Shame too cause it looked like it was a pretty house. You writing this down? It's important. Now watch your step." She turned down a long hallway and started walking slowly and carefully towards the bedroom.

"What other questions you got for me? And you're kind of young, aren't you? To be doing this sort of work?"

Billy was in fact writing it down. "I'm older than I look." he said. "Any indications where the fire originated from?"

"Yeah, all you young people say that." She snorted and stepped in a four inch puddle of water. "Bedroom. The cause is still undetermined at this point but we're shooting for a cigarette. There is an ashtray in there. And you know, they add up to FIRE!" She turned and shouted the last word at him, then laughed at the look on his face.

"Okay then, any more questions, cause I'm a firefighter you know and can answer anything."

Billy did jump slightly reflexively at the shout. It wasn't quite a flinch, more a start.

"Let's see, cause, time, area, who called it in...I, think that's it." he said. "Thanks for your help. And not dying in putting out the fire."

"Sure thing, young man." She couldn't help but say. "And just down there, on your left, is the bedroom. There's a few cops down there, so you'll have to check in with them first. Good luck!"

"Thanks again." he nodded.
