Spy Tech, Class Five (02/07)

Wednesday, February 7, Period 1

The usual arrangement of screen and projector are in place in M's classroom today. Currently projected on the wall is the following slide:

UNEXCUSED ABSENCES
JIM ELLISON (CLASS THREE)
ALEX KRYCEK (CLASS FOUR)

"Ellison, I will need a written excuse from you before the end of the week, or you'll be assigned detention. Krycek, you have until next week's class to bring me your excuse. You may all turn in last week's homework assignment to Blank and Santos before you leave today.

Next week there will be a test on the material we've covered thus far. Therefore, following a brief lecture today, you may have the remainder of the class to review."

LECTURE: "Today's topic is X-Ray Glasses. Since this is a high school class, there will be no demonstration of the item. I apologize for raising anyone's hopes." M gave the class a disdainful and not particularly apologetic look as she changed the slides being projected on the screen. "These particular glasses were designed to allow the wearer to detect the presence of concealed weaponry. I'm certain you can imagine that isn't all they allow the wearer to detect mildly NWS."

DISCUSSION: "I want your opinion of this technology. Does it provide a necessary service, or does it cross the line into unnecessary invasion of privacy?"

TEST REVIEW: Study your notes from previous classes or discuss them with your fellow students. M and her TAs will be available to answer questions.

Class One: Introductions
Class Two: Cameras
Class Three: Underwater Technology
Class Four: Concealed Weapons

Anders's handwavey homework was, to be honest, very obviously halfhearted. Actually, halfhearted was a generous assessment; it was scanty at best.

Annette's homework was great, really. She worked very hard on it and turned it in with pride. Yep.

Parker's paper was about concealing blades inside make-up items, strongly inspired by her research on Chiyome, who ran a school for female ninjas (deadly blossoms) in the sixteenth century. There were also a few notes about poisoned jewelry, and the possibility of using high heels as concealment for blades.

It's possible Parker might be wearing such a pair of modified shoes right now. Or not. Hard to say.

D turned in her assignment in a very handwavey manner and rushed as I have company on the way.

Hikaru turned in his well thought out but omg handwavey paper.

Schrodinger turned in his Handwaved and probably a little scarily good homework.

Mac handed in her essay. It was neat and thorough as always but mostly handwavey due to muns head being stuffed with cold medicine rather than thoughts and detailed the use of pellets of poison in adapted everyday objects, using an example she'd found where an umbrella was used to poison a man on a subway train.

John turned in his homework, which was complete with a few sketches and partial blueprints--i've said too much.

Broots turned in his homework.

Kabuto turned in his homework, which was quite possibly overly detailed about the ways one can conceal kunai, as well as how the scrolls he'd pointed out during discussion last time worked.

Jack handed in his essay (which had a small coffee stain on the front page). It was well-written, well thought out, and contained a logical and possibly overly-detailed examination of the ways in which a poison absorbable through the skin could be used very effectively as a weapon. The main premise was a small capsule, held under the tongue, that could be cracked very carefully while the intended victim was distracted, then passed by mouth-to-skin contact.

Setsuna turned in her homework totally on time, omg. There was more original thought put into it this time, which meant that her spelling had gotten worse.

Re: DISCUSSION

[identity profile] bound2blade.livejournal.com 2007-02-07 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's only an invasion of privacy," Setsuna put in, "if you're using it merely for the sake of using it. But if there is an intention and a need...I mean, really, it's only putting those without any sort of special sight or sensing abilities on a more level playing field."

Re: DISCUSSION

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2007-02-07 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"Totally depends on who's using it," Anders said indifferently. "Just like anybody who's got special powers around here can abuse them or use 'em for good. Well, almost anybody, at least."

Re: DISCUSSION

[identity profile] misshargrove.livejournal.com 2007-02-07 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"I think only certain people should be allowed to use them." She offered, totally wishing she could get her hands on a pair.

Re: DISCUSSION

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2007-02-07 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
"If the intent is to look for weapons, it's a necessary service on the part of law enforcement. It's a deterrent, as much as anything else, like X-Ray machines at courthouses. All guns are licensed inside this country; and most bladed weapons are illegal and need to be declared as well," Parker said slowly. "However, I think it carries a fairly high potential for abuse for either amusement or harassment, and therefore, ought to be licensed along the same lines, and not be commercially available."

Re: DISCUSSION

[identity profile] dbiers.livejournal.com 2007-02-07 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"That very much depends on the situation." D said, "in some situations, it's vital to the greater good, in others it's a gross violation of privacy."

Annette took out her notebook and lay her head on her desk. She then began to draw hearts on a clean sheet of paper.

Lana poked her head in at the beginning of class to talk to M. "Hi, Ms. M? I'm Lana Lang, Jim Ellison's roommate." She thought roommate sounded better than girlfriend for this purpose. "He's sick today and won't be able to make it to class. He also asked me to give you this handwavy note for his absence last week."

[OOC: Jim Mun's computer is dead - thus Jim is sick as well. :( ]

Nadia was there. Looking a little preoccupied, but there, nonetheless.
