Library [02/06]

Sam was on the lookout for any attacking coconuts as he went to open the library. Sure, they were probably gone by now, but he wasn't dropping his guard just yet.

Sam had grabbed the deck of cards that the aides kept stashed under the counter, and was trying to guess what card would come up before he turned it over.

"Ya ain't thinkin' 'bout playin' poker, are ya son?" Jed could be sneaky-like when he felt like it.

Sam's head snapped up, and he tried to look innocent as he shuffled the cards into a pile. "Uh, no sir. I was...playing Solitaire."

"Was ya now? Well, I don't knows this solitaire so I reckon ya can be playin' it"

Jed looked around the library. "What kinds of books ya be handin' out here?"

"Oh, we have all kinds of books," Sam replied, perking up. "Some are for classes, and some are for pleasure reading."

Jed stared down at the youngster. "Ya have any of them picture books?"

"I'm sure we do," he said. "Is there any subject of picture book in particular that would interest you?"

He might have grinned. "Well now son, ya got any of them skin type picture books? I might be havin' to confyscate them if I declare them unfit for youngsters eyes."

Sam's eyes widened, and he shook his head quickly, praying that any dirty magazines were still hidden in Special Collections. "No sir, we don't have anything like that. This is a clean library."

"Well, you're green enough to stick in the grass and grow, ain't ya?" Jed chortled.

"What's in the special collection's? Anythin' worth a looksee in there?"

Sam blushed a little in embarrassment and wondered how much he could admit to. "Um, special collections is where we keep the more...fragile and special books, and students need a teacher's permission to go in there."

"Go ahead on, son, take me to this here special collections." Jed said as he curled his lips over his toothpick.

Sam knew he had some leeway with the principal, but he was pretty sure that Zoe would kill him if he got one of the board members eaten by whatever hung out in special collections. "Um, I don't know if that's such a good idea," he started. "It's kind of a mess in there right now, and really dusty. It might not be healthy for you. You're much better off out here."

"Lord knows I don't need to be gettin' my nose all dustyed up." He drummed his fingers on the counter. "Well then, son, ya just keep up the good work, ya hear?" He tipped his hat and off he went.

Sam gave him a little wave as he went and sighed with relief.
