Library [02/02]

Rory came in bright and early and smacked a poster on the door before positioning herself behind the desk as usual with her coffee.

She grabbed a stack of books, and spent the day deep in research - both her own personal problem, and for the problems with the shadows.

[I'm AFK most of the day, so please mod Rory if you need help with something. Wait for OCD is up and a little different today. Please wait for further OCD on the specific research thread, as it will be coming later while I am unconscious and people in Europe are not. That OCD is up, too! Whooooo!]

Sakura and her laptop arrived as soon as the library was open. Dawn being attacked in her class had already prompted her to stay up all night combing every database she could possibly access for information, but Yomiko had told her about the library here, so here she was.

She hadn't known anything about the research group, but when she saw the poster she had to agree that a team effort was more logical and (hopefully) efficient, and once Cameron had related everything he knew, she got down to business.

She started where she always did: looking up as many references to shadows as she could find in literature and folklore. It hadn't failed her yet.

Sakura didn't take too long to come across Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale about the Shadow (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shadow_(fairy_tale)), which she then cross-referenced with several other accounts, all of which seemed to have the common theme of shadows trying to feed off substance in order to gain something for themselves.

"This seems to be exactly what our shadows are doing. Now, what is it they're really trying to gain?"

Overhearing Sakura from his spot, Cameron pushed to his feet and moved closer to where she was sitting. "I thought they were just snacking," he remarked.

Sakura shook her head and leafed through another book nearby. "All of these stories say that the shadows became more and more solid, or more real, the longer they stayed to feed on people, and their victims less so." She leaned back and paged down a screen or two on her laptop, and said, "Our victims have become less solid, very tired, and very cold -- which would indicate that they're also feeding off of energy. The question then is what they plan to do with that energy."

Cameron frowned. "I'm pretty sure those shadows haven't gotten more solid," he said. "The ones that attacked me last night just went right through me."

He paused and looked down at himself, realising that he was sort of see-through. "I was a bit more solid than this last night," he added.

"That's likely to be a literary embellishment," Sakura agreed. "There almost always is. The energy drain, however, is apparent, and appears to be ongoing -- which makes this a high priority issue."

Not really sure what she was saying, Cameron made a stab in the dark. "Because energy never disappears?"

The look Sakura gave him was intent and yet somehow impersonal at the same time. "Because if the evidence is to be followed logically, they will drain you out of existence."

"That's uh..." Cameron swallowed and to be honest, this wasn't really a surprise considering how he had been feeling after every attack. "Okay. I mean, not okay. Just... Yeah, I've got nothing."

Sakura nodded. His reaction was to be expected from someone who had just been told they might die. "If we can find a way to stop them, then you should return to normal."

That was . . . about as reassuring as she was capable of being.

Cameron raised an eyebrow. "No ifs. We're at Fandom, we'll figure this out." Good thing he was an optimist even if it wouldn't hurt to hear it from someone else.
