“Since I know writing thrills the pants off of all of you I’m sorry to say I decided to maybe try something a little different today. You made two characters last week and I want you to get to know them a little better. Today you’re going to choose one of them, partner up and act like they would in one of these situations. Your character can take any role in the situation. Choose which would fit them best I suppose. You can pick.” He hands out a sheet that reads:

Falsely accused of something
Driving to the zoo
Stuck in an elevator
Choosing a movie to see
Seeing the thing you most fear
Getting an outfit for a date

“Do whatever. Just don’t be too loud, got it? I want you to fill this out for homework as the character that you didn’t play today. I’m up here if you need me.” He proceeds to turn his attention to his laptop. He’s working towards an impending deadline as usual.

"Probably not," Angela agreed.

She ducked her head, eyeing the list of scenarios and trying to come up with a character; she decided to make it someone like her friend Ricky, but with superpowers. "Um, I can do getting an outfit for a date. My character is a really compassionate, creative 18-year-old guy who happens to be bi. Oh, and he has, I don't know, superspeed."

Turtle chuckled a little. "Getting an outfit for a date works, 'cause I was gonna go with Tanner. He's a stupid jock who's rich because his dad owns a chain of Chinese restaurants, and I think he'd make a pretty...interesting judge for what..."

She paused a moment. "He needs a name. Your character. I can't just call him 'your character.'"

Angela thought about it. "His real name is Juan but he likes to be called Johnny," she said. "So is Tanner Chinese, or is that just what his dad does?"

"Chinese-American, yeah," Turtle nodded. "But he's actually more American than Chinese because his dad was half, too, and his mother was actually a full on American girl, but his dad dropped her when Tanner was young for a new Chinese bride, who he married only to get a secret family receipe."

Turtle was so not taking this all from her suspicsions about the Hoo family, really, she wasn't.

"Getting a stepmom for that reason would suck," Angela said. "Okay. So Tanner and Johnny are shopping for a dance, and they're trying to pick out clothes?" She paused. "They aren't going together, are they?"

Turtle paused for a very important realization. "Going to get clothes together, or going to the dance together?" She looked a little wide-eyed, getting instant images of Doug and Theo going to a dance together and being very disturbed by the thought.

Angela couldn't help but Grin at Turtle's expression. "I meant going to the dance together, but I was just asking! It's probably better if we don't do it that way."

Turtle nodded. "Yeah. Dou-- errr, I mean, Tanner wouldn't go to a dance with a guy, but he would go with a friend to go shopping for clothes." Paaaause. "To make fun of the other guy, of course. Tanner's a jerkface."

"Johnny wouldn't care," Angela said. "He got picked on a lot, and he just deals with it, you know? He's very positive."

"Which is probably the only reason he'd hang out with Tanner, then," Turtle said with a wry sort of shrug. "So, should we do this thing, then? Johnny and Tanner go shopping, so they can be the prettiest princesses at the ball?" She smirked a little.

"We still have time left in class," Angela shrugged. "So, okay."

She shuffled her shoulders, getting into character. She closed her eyes to signal she was ready.

"One thing, Tanner? I am not wearing a penguin suit, I don't care if everyone else does."

"That's coooool," Turtle said, mustering up her best blockhead drawl. "I'm gonna wear one of those tux shirts. You could get one too, maaaan."

"They're a little, mmmm, not-me," Angel said diplomatically. "I know! You could get one and wear it with a velvet blazer. Dress it up a little."

"Velvet blazer?" ~~Turtle~~ Tanner looked at ~~Angela~~ Johnny skeptically. "That totally ruins the point."
