Film and Lit, 1/25/07

Daisy was hovering over the coffee machine in the classroom again. Looked like these first thing in the morning classes weren't quite her cup of tea, as it were.

If they listened closely, the students might just overhear her mutter "my kingdom for Der Waffle House" under her breath as she sipped.

"Okay," she said when everyone had arrived and she was suitably caffeinated. "You guys had some good stuff to say on Edgesprinter last week, but we've got something that you might have even more to say about, this time. Love them, hate them, be entirely unaffected by them, never read them, pretty much everyone has heard of the Barry Plodder series. Today, we're going to take a look at bits of the first book, and corresponding scenes from the first movie. Feel free in the discussion to bring up anything else you might know about the series and how it got translated to the screen."

She passed out a few sheets of notes as well as book excerpts, and started the movie bits. When all that was done, she turned back to the class. "One of the biggest criticisms of the movie versions is how they don't include enough of the books. Considering that the books have gotten progressively longer and more intricately plotted, how might Hollywood work on incorporating more of the books into the movies? Should they try? What would you do, if you were tasked with making a movie of something as widely read, debated, and held dear as these books?"

She nodded slightly to Jaye. "And, yes, I understand there's a booming fan community for the books and movies, and that this community has its own . . . interesting facets. Feel free to discuss that as well, but try to get the other stuff in, first."

"See, my problem with the movie isn't that it leaves out parts of the book. It's that it leaves too much in. It's such a direct adaptation, with almost no concern for adjusting events to make them more cinematic," Weiss said totally echoing his mun. "It's like the movie equivalent of a book on tape."

"I totally agree. But don't you think, at least, in the case of the third one, there was an attempt to actually make a movie?" Cassie said doing likewise.

"Yeah, but did you see the werewolf? That's nothing like how werewolves were described in the book. An' it looked mangy. I was kinda disappointed," Zero said. "An' some of the stuff they leave out turns out to be a major plot point later on," she added, likewise echoing her mun.

"And the stuff they put in has absolutely nothing to do with the plot. And I think the guy with the camera was a bit drunk." Broots added echoing the mun like the rest of them

"Oh, definitely. With most of them, it's as thought they break down the script into a series of scenes from the books, with no concern about how to link them together. You may have some of the general feel of the books, but without the enormous and obsessive fanbase, these movies would not be hits," Hamlet said possibly parroting his mun.
