Hunting 101 Class 3 -- Wednesday Period 7

When the students entered, they saw John sitting at his desk and two tables set out at the front of the room. One holds the sign in sheet and a pile of handouts. The other holds a number of curious items.

John waited until all his students had filed in and taken their seats.

"So last week you faced your first senario with a ghost. Nobody managed to get themselves killed and everyone eventually managed to take out the ghost." He leaned back on his desk. "Even more impressive, no one took out the house as well. Two things it's always good to remember: don't burn down a house while you're still in it. And ghosts can turn incorporeal at will. You can't set them on fire."

John pushed away from his desk and went over to a side table where a number of items were laid out. "There are however a few things that you can use when fighting a ghost that actually do more harm to them than to you. Iron temporarily disrupts a ghost's energy. Anything you can find that's iron -- some crowbars, fireplace pokers, cast iron frying pans -- " John had examples of each of these and held them up in turn, "can be used as a weapon against a spirit."

He the frying pan down and moved down the table where he picked up a salt shaker. "Salt is probably one of the most versatile weapons a hunter can have. Salt circles can be used for protection against not only ghosts but demons and some other evil entities." He put the shaker down and picked up a small crystal. "Salt can also be used offensively and rock salt such as this is the easiest to handle. It disrupts a ghost's energy much the same way iron does. Rock salt pieces like this or some larger, can be thrown, either by hand or using a weapon such as a sling shot." He moved down the table a little bit more to where there was a pile of much smaller crystals. "Smaller crystals such as these can be useful as well, when packed into shotgun shells." He picked up such a cartridge also sitting on the table. "You've heard of buckshot?" John grinned. "Well this is ghostshot.

"And it's not something you can just buy from any sporting goods store. You have to make it yourself." John handwavily demonstrated how to load shotgun cartridges with rock salt, explaining how as he went. When he was done he headed back over to his desk. "All the information we've discussed is covered in the handout you took at the beginning of class, including a list of steps in how to reload shotgun shells. Feel free to come up and examine everything, and try your hand at making rocksalt cartridges. Also I'd like to know how much experience and how comfortable each of you is with firearms, so I can set up balanced groups for next week's practical."

[OOC: wait for OCDs are up! Have at it! :)]

Sokka held up his hand and waved it, and then stood up without being called on.

"I'm confused. Iron can't be any good against ghosts because weapons go right through them."

John gets a special smile on his face when the prof talks about reloading shotgun shells.

Last term she learnt that those funny P-E-N things wrote rather more cleanly on her parchments than quills, and so Luna took good notes.

Setsuna is taking very, very detailed notes. With diagrams. All in Japanese.

Liz took down detailed notes.

Chris took good notes and wondered how much of this information was in the Book and if it was worth adding if it wasn't.

Now this was something Edward could get a handle on. He didn't necessarily need to risk his automail but any metal object present would definitely be useful.

Edward stuck his hand in the air. "Where the rock salt is concerned - does the weapon have to consist solidly of salt, or would, say, a sword coated in sodium do the trick as well?"

"Does the salt hurt the ghosts are they just allergic to it?" Blair asked, raising his hand.

Sokka, highly interested, poked and prodded at everything and examined the handout carefully, but didn't try using the reloader yet.

Parker's a little skeptical of salt shells, but hey, she's willing to be convinced. She picked up the gun and carefully examines the reloader, checking everything to see how it goes together.

To the casual observer, it may have appeared that Luna spent more time tracing patterns in the salt that fell in a fine dusting on the table than actually trying out the items.

They might have been correct...

John tries the reloader. His grin may be happy-scary.

Tannim picked up each of the objects and looked them over. He liked the feel of the crowbar in his hands. He tried using a couple of different grips on it and swung it experimentally.

Setsuna inspected the objects carefully, filing away more notes in her brain about them.

Neil blanched, even though he'd spoken with Mr. Winchester at the beginning of the semester. He tried slunk down in his chair and tried to be as discreet as possible as he dodged the question.

"I've never used anything like this before," Sokka volunteered. The little matter of whether he'd even known that guns like this existed? Not gonna mention that.

"Very."

John then gave an abbreviated list of small and heavy arms he was familiar with. INcluding Nerf and Airsoft and slingshot.

After spending much of the class trying to sink under his desk, Neil politely approached Mr. Winchester, hands folded nervously into the small of his back.

"Mr. Winchester?"
