Adventuring Survival Tactics, Period 4, A Classroom, 1/19/07

The Doctor had upgraded from carpet swatches to bean bag chairs, this week. There were a multitude of colors and patterns. He was sitting in one himself, that was bright pink with big white polka dots.

"Today, we're talking about a very, very important tool. That is running away. Also known as the tactical retreat, skidaddle, and vamoose. You may think that facing up to something involves standing your ground and not backing down, but that's just completely nutters, that. You stand your ground when you're ankle-deep in quicksand, you've doomed yourself. Now, retreat a few steps and get your enemy there, well, congratulations. You've used running away to your advantage, you have."

He clapped his hands together and smiled.

"Now obviously, this topic could have a lot of debate. And that's exactly what I want you to do. Pair up, and do a bit of pro/con work. Think about how you can use retreat for good, and how it might not work out. Also, think about any adages and sayings you know. Living to fight another day is much better than dying a brave man, I've found. I'll be happy to debate this point with anyone, but the main lesson here is this: There is no stigma to running away. It does not make you a coward. A coward dies in the face of horrible odds. A brave man retreats to live under opression until his true opportunity presents itself."

"Also, I want you to think about the importance of proper footwear, how high heels will be the death of all of you, the ability of women to find the one pothole in an open field, and why twisted ankles are completely and utterly inevitable. Go on. Discuss."

He felt rather smug.

Even though he'd really just succesfully taught... almost nothing at all.

Jack, ensconced on a lime green and yellow pinstriped beanbag, just sort of stared at the Doctor through the lecture.

When it was done he said, "Huh," and looked around for someone to pair up with.

Gwynn smiled at him. "Need a partner?"

"Hey, Gwynn. Absolutely." He grinned and waved at the space next to him. "Pull up a beanbag and tell me what you think of running away as a survival tactic."

Gwynn smiled and got comfortable on a bright blue beanbg.

"Well, in some instances it does make sense to beat a hasty retreat."

Perched on a beanbag, Isabel nodded, understanding the need for a practical/tactical retreat.

Z sat down across from Isabel and asked her, "Hey, want a partner?"

Oh, yeah, Z kind of looked like just-kidnapped hell warmed over.

"Sure," Isabel said absently as she looked up from the letter she was writing her mom. "Holy crap Z! What happened?"

Lana looked at the beanbag chair a little suspiciously, just in case. She was a bit relieved to have running away brought up as a topic since, honestly, she felt that was probably her best skill in a physical conflict.

"Hey." Alanna bounced her been bag chair a little closer to Lana.

Lana smiled at her. "Hey, Alanna. So... running away. Not something you probably need very often as an option."

Running away? Summer had no problem with that. In fact, she figured that would be something she'd be pretty good at.

"Hey," Tannim said. "Want to team up?"

Ray didn't much like the thought of running away. He didn't see the point even though it did prove to be the safest option in some cases.

"Ray," he said with a slight nod. "And I don't like running. For exercise? Okay, sure. Away from something? Not a fan."

Sitting on a beanbag, Zack stared at his feet. "But I don't wear high heels."

River sat on a purple bean bag, wobbling back and forth. She could definitely see the advantage of running away sometimes.

Pippi sits down next to River, she's got a black eye but otherwise seems okay.

"Running away can be good. It worked with Miss Prissy-Lissy for years."

Missy Prissy Lissy, wants to have a kid. She'll have to get another. No not me!

River shuddered at Pippi's thoughts about Missy Prissy-Lissy. "Running away can be very good. A lot of the time. You just have to know when to stop running."

Stark, on a blue-striped beanbag, looked around for someone to talk to but I think I may pass out momentarily. Running away was something he was so very okay with.
