The Doctor had upgraded from carpet swatches to bean bag chairs, this week. There were a multitude of colors and patterns. He was sitting in one himself, that was bright pink with big white polka dots.

"Today, we're talking about a very, very important tool. That is running away. Also known as the tactical retreat, skidaddle, and vamoose. You may think that facing up to something involves standing your ground and not backing down, but that's just completely nutters, that. You stand your ground when you're ankle-deep in quicksand, you've doomed yourself. Now, retreat a few steps and get your enemy there, well, congratulations. You've used running away to your advantage, you have."

He clapped his hands together and smiled.

"Now obviously, this topic could have a lot of debate. And that's exactly what I want you to do. Pair up, and do a bit of pro/con work. Think about how you can use retreat for good, and how it might not work out. Also, think about any adages and sayings you know. Living to fight another day is much better than dying a brave man, I've found. I'll be happy to debate this point with anyone, but the main lesson here is this: There is no stigma to running away. It does not make you a coward. A coward dies in the face of horrible odds. A brave man retreats to live under opression until his true opportunity presents itself."

"Also, I want you to think about the importance of proper footwear, how high heels will be the death of all of you, the ability of women to find the one pothole in an open field, and why twisted ankles are completely and utterly inevitable. Go on. Discuss."

He felt rather smug.

Even though he'd really just succesfully taught... almost nothing at all.

Z grinned. "That's probably next week. So, what are your feelings on running away?"

"I guess it depends on the situation," she said. "When the trolls where here I was with the group that went in Sunday morning to get people out. We got some people but then the trolls found us and started to attack. I got hurt and we ran. If I hadn't gotten hurt, I would have stayed because my friends were trapped and I wanted to get them back."

"Yeah, but the odds were turned against you when you got hurt. You could have been captured yourself, which would have done your friends no good."

"Oh I know. Which was why I didn't put up too much of a fuss when they dragged me out of there," Isabel agreed. "It's all a matter of picking your battles, I think. And know when the odds are in your favor to either stay and fight or run like hell. And for the record? When I'm in a situation that might require running? I'm usually wearing my boots."

"Exactly. And, yeah, I don't even own shoes I can't run in."

"Oh see I do have plenty of those, and they do have their uses," she grinned wickedly. "Like the instep of the jock that thinks just because you're dancing together he can grab your ass."

Z grinned back at her and said, "I like the way you think."

"Please, it was either that or my knee to his crotch. I figured the foot was a little more subtle." Isabel snickered, "Of course the way he whined, subtle pretty much wasn't an option. They even came in useful here. Last February at Jack's birthday party some sort of demonic critters invaded the hotel. One of them bite Angela ankle and I punted it with my pointy-toed imitation Jimmy Choos."

"And then did you run away?" Z asked Isabel.

"I wouldn't neccesarily call it running away. It was more a decision not to be the dumb blondes in the monster movie," she shrugged. "Something had already tried to eat us once. Why ever would we go investigate more odd noises in the dark library? We headed for the crowds and light."

Z nodded, then winced a little because that aggravated her headache. "A strategic retreat."

Yet again Isabel wished she had Max's talents at healing. "Exactly. Do you have class after this?"

"No," Z said, "I can go back to sleep. Thank God."

"Good. I've got library detail for the rest of the afternoon. But do you need anything? I can run it by after I'm done with that."

"No, I'll be fine," Z assured her. "If I need anything, I can make Luke's robot trashcan thing get it for me."

"I saw that in the common room the other day. It looks cute," Isabel laughed.

"It is! And kinda goofy," Z added. "And it can work the synthetron, so yay."

"Well there you. Figure out how to teach it to give backrubs and foot massages and you're all set," she grinned.

"Don't think I haven't tried."

Isabel laughed. "I don't blame you."
