Tremble Foolish Mortals: The Gods and You , Class Two [Period 5, Thursday]

Ares was lounging in his chair, feet up on the desk when the students came in. Once everyone was seated he stood and started lecturing.

"Afternoon, class, firstly I would like to inform you that I am taking detention this weekend, I plan on making it very memorable, and I would be pleased to add any of you to the festivities. Today we are going to talk about a subject very near and dear to my heart," he paused. "Me. Ares, God of War."

"Since I realise there is nowhere near enough time to cover this subject the way it deserves I am going to let you guys direct the flow. I am here to answer any of your questions about me." He sat back down and grinned. "So, ask away."

"I'm sure you were." Jack smirked and leaned forward, not to get a better look, of course, just to show he was paying attention. "Does that mean there was another god of war before you, or did the world have to make do with divinely unsanctioned wars until you were ready to start doing the job?"

"Huh." Between the distraction provided by Ares himself, and the puzzle of what he'd just said, Jack momentarily forgot that their teacher was just an alien with delusions of grandeur. "How does that work?" he asked curiously. "If there's more than one of you? How do you decide which god gets which war, or tribute, or worship, or whatever it is that gods get? Or did you just get rid of all the others when you took over?"

"So, you're not really
the
god of war, you're just
a
god of war. Interesting," he said thoughtfully. "And bizarre that the gods of war get along."

"Puts you one up on most people, then," he said. "But it's still odd."

Jack nodded. "And I guess there's no point being a divine being if you can't make up whatever rules you want."

"Like what?" he asked. "And made by who?"

Jack thought about it for awhile. "So you're not really that different from everybody else," he finally said. "You've got rules yoi have to follow, and someone to answer to if you break them."

Jack stifled his first response - because he could do without another Saturday spent in detention - and sat back, satisfied with the answers he'd received.

Kawalsky rolled his eyes from nearby, arms folded, mentally torn between his dislike for Harkness and his kneejerk reaction to be opposed to anyone who thought they were a god.
