Tremble Foolish Mortals: The Gods and You , Class Two [Period 5, Thursday]

Ares was lounging in his chair, feet up on the desk when the students came in. Once everyone was seated he stood and started lecturing.

"Afternoon, class, firstly I would like to inform you that I am taking detention this weekend, I plan on making it very memorable, and I would be pleased to add any of you to the festivities. Today we are going to talk about a subject very near and dear to my heart," he paused. "Me. Ares, God of War."

"Since I realise there is nowhere near enough time to cover this subject the way it deserves I am going to let you guys direct the flow. I am here to answer any of your questions about me." He sat back down and grinned. "So, ask away."

Rikku made a humph sort of noise. And couldn't keep herself from asking a question.

"Have the people that you've oppressed ever come after you?"

"No," Ares replied cheerfully. "Since I've never oppressed anyone, that's never been an issue."

"You said last week people killed each other to make you happy. How is that not being oppressed?!" She folded her arms.

"I didn't force them to kill each other," Ares said. "Nor did I force them to worship me."

Rikku stopped for a moment. "You didn't?" Okay, so, that was different. Maybe she'd misjudged him, even.

Maybe. "Wait, what do you mean by 'force'? Like, 'Hey, I won't make you, but if you don't, I'll blow up your stuff and set big demons to eat your family?' That's not 'force'."

Ares snorted. "Please, I think I'm capable of a little more subtlety than that." Besides, it worked much better when they didn't know you were the one sending the things with sharp pointy teeth.

Rikku considered. "So, then, I mean. People following you and all that - it's their choice?" She scratched her head. "I thought the whole religion-thing was about control."

"Religions often are," Ares said. "But religions are by and large a mortal construct, sure I like the worshippers and the priestesses and the handmaidens, but I'm still going to exist without them."

"So ... we shouldn't really blame you for what your followers do." Her thoughts went back to Yevon. "But how do we know you're not evil?"

"Only if I tell them to do something and they actually do it," Ares replied. "You don't. I wouldn't consider myself evil, but there are other..."

"Right, but," Rikku fidgeted a bit, trying to think of how to word her thoughts. "If you tell them to do stuff, and they do it, that's still their choice. It's not your fault - well, I mean, it is, but it's still theirs. You can't just go, "Yevon made me" or "Ares said so" and expect that to make things okay. You know? So if you were evil, they'd still be evil, too."
