Folklore and Fact: Mystical Artifacts Week 2 [Thurs/2nd Period]

Upon entering the classroom today students would find Sakura sitting calmly at the yellow table in the center of the room, watching a slideshow playing out on the three display screens on the front wall. The slides contained such images as a genie's oil lamp, a pumpkin-turned-stagecoach (Sakura's jaw tightened ever so slightly at that), a sword in a stone, and a mirror that seemed to be showing images from an entirely different locale.

Sakura waited until everyone had arrived and then let the slideshow play through again. "Most of you should recognize at least a few of the images shown here," she said. "They're all prominent features of folk literature in Earth cultures. Last week I asked you all to bring in a story from your own culture that features an object or artifact that might fit into the category we're studying. I'd like each of you to share the story you chose. It doesn't have to be long; just tell us the basic idea, and what object in the story might be a Precious artifact. Please discuss this among yourselves and compare stories from your own cultures that might be similar. If any of you are in Professor Aziraphale's class on fairy tales, feel free to share anything you might have read there that is relevant here."

She paused. "Some tales from folklore and literature can be found in varying forms around the world; the story of the great flood, for example, can be found in numerous cultures. This tends to indicate that there is an increased likelihood of a true Precious artifact behind its origin, although in the case of the deluge we've yet to determine what that might be. Now please, share your stories."

[OOC: Class Info and Roster. I'll ping in as I can, but I've got plotty obligations today as well so talk amongst yourselves. I'll give you a topic. The Prince of Tides was about neither a prince nor tides. Discuss. OCD is up!]

"The only story from my culture is the one that the Gods teacher thinks I'm 'special' for sharing in his class," Valentine muttered before he piped up to share his. "It's a story about some girl who puts a charm to her face and saw the twin cities reflected in it, and then created them out of a blank sheet of void while sitting on the manky carpet. Then she put the charm under the queen's sign, or something like that." He grinned, tempted to say that the artifact was the carpet, but he wasn't really that stupid. "I'm going out on a limb and saying that the artifact is the charm, but nobody really knows what the charm itself was."

"I think you're planning on covering Beowolf ya? And Thor's hammer is done to death so I thought I'd go with something a little more obscure."

Pippi tells the story of the Little Viking Boy and the North Wind (http://strongestgirl.livejournal.com/86298.html).

"Well, I suppose there's at least two artifacts, the cloth and the cane... But there's also the goat... Can a living thing be an artifact? There also the possibility that only one of those things is 'real' and the others are red herrings I guess... It might be that the tree gifts are just made up and the artifact is actually the cave or something."

Wyatt was itching to talk about Excalibur, but since the sword was already on the syllabus, he talked about the Holy Grail instead.

Jo shared the story of Why the Sea is Salt.

"The handmill could be an artifact," Jo said. "That or it was cursed."

Dean told the story of the Cruel Sister (http://www.moonwise.com/cruelsis.html). "The harp coul be considered an artifact, if a kinda grisly one," he said. "Also a haunted one."

"Stories and legends from my own world?" Balthier thought a moment and pursed his lips as he did. "Well there is the legend of the Dynast Kings (http://strahl-pirate.livejournal.com/2334.html) that I suppose would do, though it's not much of a legend, more history really."

Walter was disappointed that Wyatt had brought up the Holy Grail, since he'd planned to discuss a movie version of the story he'd seen performed by a comedy troupe. The phrase "watery tart" never failed to amuse.

Instead, he told the story of Jack and the Beanstalk.

"The beans and the singing harp are artifacts at the very least."

Carmela really didn't have trouble coming up with a story to share. She told the class all about The Second Battle of Magh Tuiredh (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cath_Maige_Tuireadh).

Though she left out the part where all the Artifacts involved in the original battle had survived in some form or another to be used more recently in a re-enactment of said battle. And then how a certain Spear-weilding Power had saved the Universe by throwing it at the Lone Power, stopping dark matter from consuming everything.

Evie, of course, told the story of Imhotep and Anck-su-namun, lovers who murdered King Seti I. Imhotep's attempt to raise Anck-su-namun from the dead using the Book of Amun-Ra (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mummy_%281999_movie%29#Book_of_Amun-Ra), was thwarted by the King's bodyguards, the Medjai. "It's reported to be covered in gold, but really, of course, it's unlikely that any of that is true. Imhotep was most likely the designer of many of the pyramids and a great physician and priest, but there's no other historical evidence that any of this is factual."

Dawn went on at great length about Dagon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dagon), particularly the references in Lovecraft's work, and the reference in the third Blade Knife movie that tied him to Dracula. "And, um, I think there's an orb in one of those stories that might be an artifact."

Kabuto (mostly) explained about the Legendary Tailed Beasts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tailed_beasts) from his homeland, and how they were sealed within people - until the Akatsuki started extracting them from people. Near the end, he shrugged slightly, smirking. "As for the artifact in question...well, the seal itself. If you're wanting details on that, one of the professors here actually has experience in sealing the Kyuubi."

"The Sun Goddess Amaterasu had been frightened by her brother into hiding in a cave. The other gods and goddesses tried to get her to come out so that sunlight would fall on the land again, but it wasn't until they hung a mirror on a tree and started dancing that she came out. Then she saw her own reflection in the mirror and was surprised enough for them to pull her back into the sky."
