Home Ec, Tuesday, 1 period

Today the class room is set up with gas stoves on each desk. The desks also have frying pans, spatulas in every version possible, small sharp knives and a cutting board. There's also a collection of food, just in case you were in doubt of what today's lesson is all about. About 36 eggs, chili, bacon, tomatos, olive oil, butter, green peppers, yellow peppers, red peppers, sausages, cheese, ham, pineapple, oranges and nacho chips.

Emma is standing in front of her desk. It looks a little like all she's wearing is a white apron. On either side of her are boxes. One is full of aprons, the other has recipe boxes.

"Good morning, students. Today we are going to make omelettes," Emma says, determined. She gestures towards the boxes. "Pick yourself an apron and a recipe box. You will use those today and then you will place them in the boxes you decorated last week."

As the students walk past her, she hands out a piece of paper.

Very good, sir. This round to you.

"Number 6. So. An omelet. I suppose you can't get what you want without cracking a few eggs, mm?"

"Unless you're vegan," Jim said. "They don't use eggs at all. It's true for me, though."

Vegan? 6 didn't understand. Some obscure trigger word? My God, he'd just been activated, hadn't he? "Jim" would say some other word and he'd be forced to carry out some inane task in the name of Number 2 and his superior.

"As it is for me," 6 said. Blast.

"Okay, according the the directions, we grab some utensils, some eggs, and have a party," Jim said. "Grab the mixing bowl and we'll have some fun."

"Indeed," 6 said. He began cracking eggs into the mixing bowl, making especially certain to demonstrate the ease with which he did the cracking. Hammer into anvil, shell into bowl. It was all the same to him.
