Ethics [Monday, January 15, 5th period]

Precisely on time, Darth Vader swept into the room and slammed the door firmly behind him.

"Today we talk about lying," he said, his masked face scanning the faces in front of him as he prowled around the classroom.

"Everyone lies," he stated flatly. "To hide things, to manipulate others, to avoid...unpleasantness." There was a definite hint of scorn in his voice at that last example. "In class today, you are required to pair up and only tell the truth." His cape whirled behind him. "And I can tell if you are not. Such disobedience will result in detention."

He paused for a moment. "And I don't believe in that axiom where if you cannot say something nice, you don't say anything at all. I do not require you to be nice. I require you to be honest." He glanced down at the student roster. "If everyone comes to class today, there will be an odd number. That final person will be interrogated by me."

He crossed his arms over his chest, his mechanical breathing the only sound for a moment. "Name. Place of birth. Classes you are taking," he barked out. "Proceed from there."

Dean resisted the urge to roll his eyes. Sure, everyone lied -- the trick was in knowing when and how to lie in order to a) not get caught and b) not hurt anybody unnecessarily. Dean liked to think he was pretty good at that.

Oh fudge. Neil thought to himself.

Though the 'fudge'? Might have been a bit stronger than 'fudge'.

Schrodinger tilted his head to the side slightly.

Oh but there were so many ways to deceive that never involved any sort of lying at all.

Turtle is either fearless, foolish, hankering for a detention, or fully convinced that it really is all an act. At the end of the lecture, her hand very firmly pierces the air, then wavers a bit in case Lord Vader cannot see it.

"If we're talking about lying, why are we doing an excersize where we have to tell the truth?"

The creaking of the glove had Turtle pausing for a good, long, hesitant moment before, warily, continuing to question his methods. It was just what she did. And she usually did it until she regretted it, and she was feeling that was going to happen again, but she was pretty used to it. "It...seems to me...." Gulp, "sir, that a lesson on when a lie or when an absolute truth is more helpful or needed would be more effective than...jus'...all lie, or all truth. 'Cause you're never gonna be in a situation where one will consistently be more effective than the other...."

Weiss... well, he did lie on occasion, but really only when it was for the best. I mean, everybody did, right? This assignment shouldn't be a problem.

Katara listened and tried not to think about what Luke and Molly had told her.

Marco worked on not snorting. It was hard.

Oh yes, so terrified. Balthier tried not to yawn, but honestly the topic of the lecture seemed rather... common sense to him. Didn't everyone know that people lied at least a little?

Not lying at all might be a little sticky if someone asked "What are your plans for your future in Fandom" or "Do you like me", but otherwise, Steerpike was quite sure he could get through this assignment just fine.

Valentine just sort of gaped at Lord Vader as the lecture went on.

Valentines were notorious liars. Well, fibbers, perhaps. But it was a way of life!

... Really, they were just tiny lies.

Jaye has her arms folded on her desk, and is resting her chin on them. Totally paying attention.

Jamie sits and doodles pictures of Vader and V making out.

Well actually it's a cartoon strip of Vader and V knocking Masks and lamenting about having UST.

"Explain what?" Jamie said trying to look innocent. "The drawing? Well I know that V isn't around anymore and I was just trying to work out why he left."

Jamie watched as Vader crumpled his drawing. "Hey! I ignored your entire lecture to draw that!"

Walter listened without signs of petrification. Really, his problems arose from lies of omission.

Irulan listened to the lesson, that wasn't anything she didn't know already. Lies, manipulation are the norm in the Imperial court.

Kaoru listened intently, a little nervous about this whole 'let's tell the truth' session...
