Novice's Guide to Villains & Villainy - Week 1, Friday, Period 3 (Danger Shop)

"Good morning," Thursday greeted the class. "I'm Thursday Next and this is a Novice's Guide to Villains & Villainy. I have several years of experience with the regular police force in Swindon, SpecOps in London and Swindon and a similar organisation called Jurisfiction. A good portion of my adult life has been spent in law enforcement, mostly investigative, and I don't have any kind of 'super power'. Super powers are not essential to understanding and defeating villains and this class will be teaching approaches that any normal person can use.

That being said, if you have powers, you are more than welcome in this class, but you won't be called upon to use said powers. This is an overview class. Don't expect to learn everything you'll need to go up against the villain of your choice. We'll be covering the basics. The first few weeks will explore the background you'll need - making the most of what you have and identifying, tracking and defeating your opponent. After that, we're going to a hands on approach.

As some of you who were here last semester would know, my background is also literature. We'll be using literary examples of villain archetypes that you'll usually find in real life. It's all on the syllabus. I suggest you take these first few light weeks to read up on the characters you'll have to face and outwit.

Next week, you'll all receive a small satchel full of items. These will be your basic tools for facing villains in this class, as well as your handbook, which if you don't have already you can get from the front of the room. Your handbook includes all of the notes you'll need for the semester and profiles on each of the villains we'll be facing. Bring both to every lesson.

Today, however, you won't need your tools. This is a light class and one you've probably had several times this week. Introduce yourself. Your name, what you're good at and how crime is dealt with in your society." She caught someone's attention and nodded at them. "You first."

"Barbara Gordon. But my friends call me Babs. I'm a really good gymnast, and I've got some martial arts training. A little bit of kick-boxing. I'm also awesome with batarangs boomerangs. The police do their best to, you know, capture the criminals, but in Gotham City, we mainly have Batman and Batgirl, and...ugh...recently Robin, who really keep a lid down on crime."

*nods* "Yep. Batgirl being the best."
