Human Anatomy, Thursday, 01/11, Period 3

Elliot looked like she was halfway between bouncing and running away in terror as she started her first class of the semester, and she kept wiping her hands on her slacks as if her palms were sweaty.

"Hi, people, welcome to human anatomy, which is the study of structures and systems of the human body,. If you didn't sign up for anatomy, you're in the wrong place. If you stick around without registering? You're volunteering to be dissected.

"I am Elliot Reid, which yes is a guys' name. Blame my dad. Call me Elliot or Dr. Reid. Doing the E.T. voice on Elliot will freak me out and earn you a detention. But basically, it's pretty easy not to get a detention in here - show up on time, don't miss more than three classes without letting me know, and don't be incredibly hugely obnoxious, and you're golden.

"I am passing around a couple of things. First, you have textbooks, which are yours to keep and love and put under your pillow. Second is my voice mail number. Call whenever. I'm also in my office Friday mornings, if you need me outside of class. You're also getting the class roster and syllabus. Syllabus is a guideline, not a rule -- it can change. Finally, my TA is John Dorian, so if you can't find me for something, talk to him."

Done with the preliminaries, she pointed to an area behind the rows of desks where seven-foot stretches of paper were taped to the floor, with buckets of markets between them. "To help make this class more visual, you're going to pair up and trace each other, and then we'll tape the drawings to the wall to fill in the body systems on as we learn them. But before you do that, I want to do some introductions. Say your name, your grade, and two interesting things about yourself. Starting with .... you." She closed her eyes and pointed randomly into the group.

"So, a nurse, huh?" asked Janet. "Why nursing school, and not med school? Also, want to pair up for this exercise?"

"Sure," Peter said. "You wanna trace or be traced? And I like the idea of how nurses get to be more hands-on with the patients."

Janet studied Peter's presumably tall and lanky figure, then glanced down at herself. "Trace me, it'll go faster," she said, then nodded as she listened to Peter talking about nursing. "Doctors sometimes have to distance themselves emotionally in order to treat a patient effectively, but I think I can manage to build a rapport. And nursing--well, every doctor needs good nurses. I think medicine's a team effort, after all."

"Absolutely," Peter agreed. He got to tracing, trying to be accurate without touching things he shouldn't. "I'm not putting doctors down or anything. It's just that I think nurses get a chance to help personalize the care more."

"I didn't think you were. I've just seen people put nurses down, and it bothers me." Janet tried not to fidget, but her hair was falling in her eyes. She inhaled and tried to blow it off her face. "I think it's great that you want to go into nursing. What made you decide that?"

"Because I'm the family rebel," Peter said with a grin. "Need some help with your hair?"

"Please," said Janet. "I keep meaning to cut it, but every time I bring it up, my girlfriend tells me she likes it long."

Peter reached up to brush Janet's hair out of her eyes. "People give me crap about my hair too. Who's your girlfriend?"

"Liz Weir. She hasn't been around much lately because the player is going nuts working two jobs, so you might not have met her yet." Janet's smile was maybe a little goopy. "So you're the family rebel with long hair, huh?"

"Oh yeah," Peter said. He came full circle on the tracing and sat back to make sure he hadn't missed any spots. "I drive my brother nuts. He wishes I wasn't such a dreamer."

Janet sat up gingerly, then glanced around herself at the tracing. "Older brother or younger?" she asked. "Either way, though, I think siblings are supposed to drive each other nuts. My brothers and I did, anyway."

"Older," Peter said. He took a look at his handiwork. "What do you think? Personally I'd say it's a dead ringer for you."

"I'd say you've captured my personality exactly," said Janet, grinning at Peter. She chuckled. "You could go into art. That would probably irk your brother even more, though."

"I can sketch halfway decently," said Janet. "If the subject involves dissected corpses, or microbes, or something like that. It's more copying than anything. Ask me to be an artist, though, and you're in a lot of trouble."

Peter got another piece of paper for Janet to trace him on. "So what are you thinking of being?"

"I'm going for an M.D." Janet started hunting down the marker Peter had uses. "Right now I'm debating between specializing in genetics or rare and infectious diseases."

[personal profile] janet_fraiser 2007-01-11 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"What drew me to them?" Janet snagged a marker and lay a piece of paper down on the floor. "The field of genetics is coming up with all kinds of fascinating information on the human genome, but for rare and exotic diseases, well, the number of people exposed to them is going to go up as the population does."

Peter tried to hold still as she traced. "Ever think science is going to come up with something that proves the impossible?"

"I don't think anything's impossible." Janet started with tracing Peter's feet. "Just that the mechanism of what makes it possible hasn't been discovered yet. Or explained yet. Which, I suppose, is a very long-winded way of saying yes. You?"

Re: Tracing, Anatomy, 1/11

[identity profile] repeterpetrelli.livejournal.com 2007-01-11 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
"I think so," Peter said. "Or I hope I do, I guess. I just feel like there's more going on around us than most people believe."

Realizing what he was saying, Peter chuckled. "'course that's not so unusual here in Fandom, I guess."

"Fandom's a law unto itself," said Janet, carefully tracing up Peter's left side. "But even out in the rest of the world, I think you're right. Maybe it's just a matter of learning how to look. Fandom should provide good training for that."

OOC: Lunch time! Late lunch time, rather.

[ooc: enjoy!]

"So it's more than just nursing for you?" asked Janet. She sat back on her heels and studied the completed tracing, then decided draw in some hair. "Something out of the ordinary or impossible?"
