Period 3: Tuesday: Zen Computer Science

Flynn sat with his feet up on the desk, waiting for everyone to saunter in to the computer lab.

Satisfied that everyone had settled in, he began.



"Greetings, Programs!" He raised his hands in greeting as he stood up from his desk.

"I am your teacher for this fine fine hour. You can call me Flynn, or Mr. Flynn if you prefer." He moved around to the front
of the desk and picked up a shiny DVD-like disc.

"This... is your identity disc. Guard it with your life. Everything you work on here will be recorded and saved on this disc."
He started marching up and down the front of the room.
"Lose it and you will be subject to immediate dereso... detention." Flynn caught himself, and realized how much of Sark's speech
he still remembered.

He sat back down on the lip of his desk.

"When you deal with computers, believe it or not, you are dealing with a literal thinking machine. While it operates on a much higher
level then we do, it's still a thinking machine."

He let that settle in for a moment.

"What I intend to show you is how to interact with your thinking machine and get the most out of it. Learn how to feel
the interactions, read the operations, and generally become a better User."

"We learn in this class by doing, but I'm not going to be so harsh as to chuck you in the deep end right away." Flynn smiled.

"So firstly, we're going to discover each other. We'll introduce ourselves, and then talk about what we do know about computers."
He smiled again.
"From there, we can discuss what your path of discovery and adventure will be for the next semester."

As the bell rang and everyone flew out to lunch, Flynn smiled. "I'll be available most any time if someone needs to talk."

Rikku bounced up and cleared her throat. "Hi! I'm Rikku, and I just got here a week ago. I'm an Al Bhed." She looked around nervously for a second just in case anybody here was an Al Bhed hater. "I like working with machina - er, machines - and I was a Guardian once and I don't know what else I'm supposed to say." She shrugged.

"I'm Veruca Cally, from Oasis on Caprica. I'm gonna be a dentist. Maybe. Maybe not. I'm not so sure anymore."

"I'm Mac." She smiled, and considered leaving it there. Concise was good, right?

"And I'm from California." After a moment she added, "Present day."

"My name is Willow Rosenberg and I'm from Sunnydale, California, year - " Willow faltered, remembering she wasn't from the year she was supposed to be from " - um, a few years ago, compared to now."

"I'm Nova...I'm from Japan," he says looking down and frowning. Nova wasn't really in the spirit for introductions today, especially in front of so many people at once.

Rikku fidgeted a bit. "Okay, so, I don't really know anything about computers. But I can make all kinds of machines, and take them apart and put them back together. Most of the time, I mean. Sometimes you've got parts left over but you can usually find something else to do with them."

Henry looked a little embarrassed. "I've never operated a computer before in my life. However, I've been told that it's an essential skill in this time period, so I'm very eager to learn." He seemed to be emboldened and finished determinedly, "I will do my best."

"I know the basics," Cally said. "But otherwise I just bribe my girlfriend to help me."

"I know... quite a lot." Mac, queen of the understatement.

She's mostly vague because she isn't quite sure where she's supposed to start when it comes to telling people what she knows.

"I'm really just getting into computers...though I was able to somehow accidentally hack into some of the Gotham City Police Department's files from my home pc a few weeks ago..."

"Computers are the most wonderful things in the history of ever!" Willow said. "They're helpful and kind and you can do all sorts of things on them that are useful as well as occasionally illegal depending on where you live but really the issue there is getting caught. Not that I would know anything about that. Breaking rules is, of course, naughty."

"...computers?" Nova blushed. He knew of computers though he didn't know what to do with one. He thought in silence without answering the question.
