Popular Culture [Monday, January 8, 7th period]

The classroom looked ordinary enough, not much surprises around or squirrels Rose hoped. She took a chalk and wrote:

'21st Century Popular Culture" then after some debate added, "Earth."

Rose faced the class and tried not to look so nervous, they looked to be a varied bunch.

"Right, I'm Rose Tyler." She began, "You can refer to me as 'Ms. Tyler' in class but hopefully not outside of it, since Ms. Tyler would likely be my mother." Rose distributed the handouts. "Before we begin, I'd like everyone to introduce themselves and what, exactly, each of you will be expecting from this class."

"I'm Anders," he said, avoiding his first name as usual. "I'm here because I'm not from Earth, and I kind of want to learn as much as I can about the popular culture here before I have to go home. Mostly I've been focusing on baseball up until now."

Rose tried to decide if he was human or a human looking alien.

"You wouldn't be a fan of cricket then would you?" Rose asked, "Scratch that, football's a better game anytime."

"Cricket rules confused me when I tried to look them up," Anders admitted. "Which football is this? The one with the funny ball or the round one?"

"The round one," Rose said, "Best game in the world." Universe. Whatever.

"Oh, gotcha." Anders nodded. "I'm not into that one so much, but a lot of people here are. You should've seen them during the World Cup a while back."

Rose snapped her fingers. "Damn, I missed the World Cup?"

"Italy won it on penalty kicks," Anders said in the tone of voice that indicated he'd been subjected to numerous rants on that very subject. "That's all I know, though."

"Italy?!" Rose took a deep, calming breath. "I meant, Italy. Wonderful."

"Nobody here seemed to be too happy about that," Anders said dubiously. "I'm still not exactly sure why, but it's probably not that different from Cubs fans being mad about missing out on the playoffs every year, or the Aerelon Archers fans complaining because Picon beat them again."

"It's just unexpected, I suppose." Rose said, he'd lost her at the other teams. "I take it, your more interested on the sports part of pop culture?"

"Actually I study that part pretty obsessively," Anders replied. "It's everything else I need to brush up on."

Rose smirked. "Thought so, well, then Mr. Anders I'll try to squeeze in something about sports in our syllabus. How does that sound?"

"That'd be great if you could work it in," Anders said. "it'd be awesome."

"Right, then. Sports." Rose said with a nod. "How long have you been in this school?"

"Two years at the end of this semester." Anders blinked a few times with the sudden realization that it had been that long. "Two -- wow. Where does the time go?"

Rose smiled. "Time tends to do that, havin' the time of your life and suddenly, time's up. I take it you're a senior?"

"No, a junior," Anders replied. "Senior soon enough though, holy frak . . . uh, sorry."

Rose raised her eyebrows at the curious word. "Sorry, just curious, are you human? If you are, are you from the future?"

"I'm human, yeah." Anders rubbed at the back of his neck. "Hard to tell if I'm from the future or the past, though; I have no idea how Colonial time lines up with time on Earth."

"Yeah, that's the problem with Time Travel." Rose mused, "Hard to tell which ways up or down sometimes."

"My best friend is from the future," Anders said with a slight grin. "2020 or sometime around then. You've traveled through time?"

"2020, good even number," Rose said, "Did my fair share of time travelling, depending on your point of view, I've either travelled for a hundred years or three years."

"Cool," Anders said admiringly. "How do you keep all the timeline stuff straight after a while? Just thinking about it gives me a headache."

"Time's always in flux, sometimes you just have to go with it." Rose advised, "But more often than not, a change in a timeline usually means someone's tampered with it, which usually is a bad thing."

"And now I'm confused and I need to sit down again," Anders concluded sheepishly.
