Popular Culture [Monday, January 8, 7th period]

The classroom looked ordinary enough, not much surprises around or squirrels Rose hoped. She took a chalk and wrote:

'21st Century Popular Culture" then after some debate added, "Earth."

Rose faced the class and tried not to look so nervous, they looked to be a varied bunch.

"Right, I'm Rose Tyler." She began, "You can refer to me as 'Ms. Tyler' in class but hopefully not outside of it, since Ms. Tyler would likely be my mother." Rose distributed the handouts. "Before we begin, I'd like everyone to introduce themselves and what, exactly, each of you will be expecting from this class."

D'oh.

"My name is Hermione Granger," she says, and she sounds like someone who's very used to speaking up in class. "I'm really only here because I'm from 1995, and there are things that I sometimes don't recognize so I want to make sure I'm as up to date as possible."

"Hallo, Hermione," Rose said, "From England, yeah? Besides the usual things, what else do you want to know about popular culture? Language? Popular movies?"

"Anything and everything, please," she says. "If you have a list of all the popular movies and books and television shows, actually, I could look them up myself, just to get an overview so I'm not behind."

Wow, she's even going to overstudy for Pop Culture.

Ah. Hermione was one of those students.

Rose nodded, "I'll be sure to hand you over a list. Although, I think you can easily catch-up, you're not far off the time line after all."

"I'm Anders," he said, avoiding his first name as usual. "I'm here because I'm not from Earth, and I kind of want to learn as much as I can about the popular culture here before I have to go home. Mostly I've been focusing on baseball up until now."

Rose tried to decide if he was human or a human looking alien.

"You wouldn't be a fan of cricket then would you?" Rose asked, "Scratch that, football's a better game anytime."

"Cricket rules confused me when I tried to look them up," Anders admitted. "Which football is this? The one with the funny ball or the round one?"

"My name is Marco, I'm from Riverside, California and I'm here because seven years have passed between December 31st and January 1st and I'd like to know what happened in between."

"I know how that feels," Rose murmured, remembering the time the Doctor accidentally brought her home skipping a whole year of her life. "Well, Mr. Marco from Riverside, among the things you want to know besides learning what happened, anything of interest you want us to focus?"

"Tv shows, computer games, and video games?" Marco said hopefully.

"My name's Alphonse Elric," he began. "I'm not even from this world, so... I guess I'll have to say this place confuses me more often than it doesn't, and I'd like to at least get an idea what goes on."

"How different is your world from this?" Rose asked, trying to guage where she should start.

"Hmm," Alphonse started listing things off his fingers as he thought about it. "It's almost like here, except without a lot of the technology. And other Fandom-exclusive, things," he added. "There's a lot of cultural and traditional things that don't exist back home either. I'd say it's almost like jumping a little back in time."

"My name is Henry Jekyll. I'm from London, in the year eighteen hundred and eighty-six." He looked a little-self conscious talking in class. "I also have a bit of catching up to do."

"No need to worry, Henry," Rose assured, "This class is designed to help you get along with this timeline, like I told Ed don't be shy to ask for help when you need it, yeah?"

Henry jumped a little when he heard the name "Ed," but calmed down when he realised it wasn't his Edward being addressed.
Henry nodded. "I will, and I apologise in advance if my questions become tiresome."

"I'm Draco Malfoy." says Draco "I'm from England but I don't really live with um..."normal" humans. There's no electricity or anything so I'm really out of touch with music and movies. And sports. And about a hundred different other things."

Rose nodded. "Alright, no need to worry about those things, Drake by the end of this semester you lot will be blending in with those versed in pop culture."

Edward was sitting backwards in his chair, arms folded over the back and chin tucked on his arms. "My name's Edward Elric," he said, then shifted enough to hike a thumb in Alphonse's direction. "I am, in fact, related to that but it's kind of sketchy how due to alternating dimensions or time warps or some weird dancing. Give me enough time and research materiels and I'll figure it out eventually."

He paused, then remembered there was a second part to the question. "Not entirely sure on why I took this class. I don't think I was awake for class sign-ups again. I'm from a different world? The culture around here is different." He waved his hand in the air flippantly. "And that whole futuristic techology and stuff. I come from the equivalent of 1915." He dropped his head back to his arms and half-heartedly listened to everyone else.

"You're Al's brother," Rose simplified, she knew something about alternate dimension relatives. "I'm sure you'll figure it out eventually."

"Well, 1915's still a way from 2007, I think it'll help you acclimate to this timezone if you stick around." Rose encouraged.

Edward nodded a bit. "I figure this will help with the pesky pop culture references people like to sneak into conversations."

Armony offered a wave to the class, albeit a little sheepishly. "My name is Armony Eiselstein," she said, and held a hand out to gesture to the Elrics. "I come from the same world as these two... or at least one of them, as it seems Al is a different Al than the one I met." She frowned. "Strange stuff, all this..." A shrug. "Anyway. I'm in this class because, like blondie over there--" She meant Edward, of course. "--said, it was the early 1900s where we lived. I figure I should be up to date if I'm gonna be a student here."

"Then no better class than this," Rose said, "Anything in particular you'd like to learn?"

Armony had to ponder this. "As much as I can, so I feel a little less foreign," she said with a chuckle.
