Heroism, Humanism & Hijinks: Literature in Action - Week 14, Period 5

Thursday gave everyone a handout that covered the topics from the semester's classes.

Topics Covered

Nursery Rhymes - gaps in the text and how they can be twisted to suit your needs
Jane Eyre - bad guys are people too, you just don't get to read their point of view
Alice in Wonderland - language is confusing. Don't get tripped up by it.
Scottish Play - literature's effect on real life
To Kill A Mockingbird - literature as an activity and morality in text
Frankenstein - perverse creations and letting loose, thinking outside the box
Romance novels - bad fiction is still fiction that must be dealt with
Detective novels - living the mystery, how to put yourself and others into the text
Treasure Island - setting up the story, research before leaping in
Brave New World - book burning, the importance of literature and the consequences of cultural oppression
A Christmas Carol - paraphrasing and using examples to explain the whole

"Next week, Danger Shop. Bring a notepad and pen. Wear shoes you can run in if you have to. A book from the course will be chosen for each of you and you'll have to set the story straight after something has gone wrong. Be prepared to interact with characters from the book and use what you've learned to get through the task. See you next week."

"No, dude, I'm stuck in it," Conner exclaimed, ever so slightly panicky about that.

"You're stuck... in a suit?" he blinked.

"Uh huh." He held up his left wrist, showing the Dino Morpher. "This is what powers it, and it won't let me flip off the switch. So to speak."

"And you can't just..." he made a gesture as if cutting the air, "use scissors?"

"Z tried that yesterday. No go."

Cameron blinked. "Sucks to be you, then."

"Eh." Conner propped his chin up on his hands and shrugged again. "It's got its upsides, sort of."

"It does?" Cameron asked, clearly suspicious. "Can you eat or... you know?" he motioned down.

"The helmet comes off," Conner said, and demonstrated. "And as for that, yeah, but trust me, you don't want to know the details."

"So you can take the helmet off but not the costume? That's weird," he frowned. "And yeah. Totally fine being in the dark."

"Don't ask me," Conner said with a laugh. "I didn't design the thing, I just use it."

"There's a lot of smart people here who might know," Cameron suggested.
