Heroism, Humanism & Hijinks: Literature in Action - Week 14, Period 5

Thursday gave everyone a handout that covered the topics from the semester's classes.

Topics Covered

Nursery Rhymes - gaps in the text and how they can be twisted to suit your needs
Jane Eyre - bad guys are people too, you just don't get to read their point of view
Alice in Wonderland - language is confusing. Don't get tripped up by it.
Scottish Play - literature's effect on real life
To Kill A Mockingbird - literature as an activity and morality in text
Frankenstein - perverse creations and letting loose, thinking outside the box
Romance novels - bad fiction is still fiction that must be dealt with
Detective novels - living the mystery, how to put yourself and others into the text
Treasure Island - setting up the story, research before leaping in
Brave New World - book burning, the importance of literature and the consequences of cultural oppression
A Christmas Carol - paraphrasing and using examples to explain the whole

"Next week, Danger Shop. Bring a notepad and pen. Wear shoes you can run in if you have to. A book from the course will be chosen for each of you and you'll have to set the story straight after something has gone wrong. Be prepared to interact with characters from the book and use what you've learned to get through the task. See you next week."

More awake than yesterday, Cameron read through the notes.

The twins looked through their notes, every once in awhile giving Matilda a good poke.

Door's reviewing Treasure Island again. For the planning and research, yes. Not the piratey bits. At all. Nor is she grinning and saying "Arrrrr" under her breath.

Conner had the handout on his desk and his copy of Jane Eyre open, and he appeared to be scribbling down study notes pretty diligently.

In reality, what was on the page was more along the lines of:

Find out if Zord will fit on island
Do I even have one?
Figure out how to keep comb in belt -- helmet hair sucks!

Dawn was a bit pale and a little greenish, but she took lots and lots of notes and reviewed them, then started rereading Brave New World just because she'd liked it.

Alec flicked a piece of paper to land on Dawn's desk. It kind of looked like it was folded and might have words in.

Dawn opened the note, then looked around for where it came from.

Alec waved a little to get her attention, raising eyebrows quizzically.

The note said: Puppy-getting went well?

Dawn beamed at Alec and nodded. It did! What do you think of the kitten that adopted Dean?

He made a face. Can we send it back without him knowing?

Dawn wasn't giggling, really. Just a cough. I don't think so. They seem kind of...attached.

I know. It's annoying. Alec now looked grumpy.

He's just a kitten, Alec. Boys were so strange.
