Heroism, Humanism & Hijinks: Literature in Action - Week 14, Period 5

Thursday gave everyone a handout that covered the topics from the semester's classes.

Topics Covered

Nursery Rhymes - gaps in the text and how they can be twisted to suit your needs
Jane Eyre - bad guys are people too, you just don't get to read their point of view
Alice in Wonderland - language is confusing. Don't get tripped up by it.
Scottish Play - literature's effect on real life
To Kill A Mockingbird - literature as an activity and morality in text
Frankenstein - perverse creations and letting loose, thinking outside the box
Romance novels - bad fiction is still fiction that must be dealt with
Detective novels - living the mystery, how to put yourself and others into the text
Treasure Island - setting up the story, research before leaping in
Brave New World - book burning, the importance of literature and the consequences of cultural oppression
A Christmas Carol - paraphrasing and using examples to explain the whole

"Next week, Danger Shop. Bring a notepad and pen. Wear shoes you can run in if you have to. A book from the course will be chosen for each of you and you'll have to set the story straight after something has gone wrong. Be prepared to interact with characters from the book and use what you've learned to get through the task. See you next week."

Molly sighed. "Why am I having such a hard time remembering what we learned in this class?" she said quietly.

"Cause half of it was completely insane," he replied matter of fact.

Molly snickered into her hand. "You'd think that would make it easier to remember," she said before starting to flip through her notes again.

"No, there's needs to be method to the madness to follow it easily," Cameron argued.

Molly gave up trying to figure out what her notes meant and leaned her head on her hand. "A method? What do you mean?"

"You know. It's easier to memorise patterns than random facts that aren't related to each other," he shrugged. "So if there was some sort of sense to the insanity, it'd be easier to memorise."

"It must make sense to Ms. Next," Molly said. "This is what she does for a living. I just wish I could actually remember writing my notes. If they weren't in my handwriting, I'd think someone else had written them."

Cameron raised an eyebrow. "You weren't possessed for the whole semester, were you?" he teased.

Molly snorted. "No. I remember everything from my other classes and I remember actually reading the books for this one. It's just the notes I took in class that are a mystery."

"Sounds to me like you need a new system," he nodded seriously.

Molly gave him a big smile. "Can't I just borrow your notes?"

Cameron laughed. "So this whole conversation was a lead up to you asking for my notes?" he teased.

"Maybe?" she said with a grin.

"What's in it for me?" he wondered.

Molly blinked at him. "The knowledge that you'll be helping me do better in class won't be enough?"

Re: Talk/Study

[identity profile] cameronmitchell.livejournal.com 2006-12-12 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well yeah." He paused. "Cookies or something would be nice too," he suggested. "But after the exams obviously."

Molly grinned at him. "Cookies I can do. Maybe when we're in LA. You are going to Angel's, right?"

Re: Talk/Study

[identity profile] cameronmitchell.livejournal.com 2006-12-12 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yep," he beamed. "I arranged it a while back. But you seriously don't have to give me anything."

Re: Talk/Study

[identity profile] bruiser-in-pink.livejournal.com 2006-12-13 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
"Angel had to call me because I kept forgetting to email him to say if I was going," Molly said with a sheepish grin. "And I will make cookies in LA. If Angel owns a hotel, there should be a huge kitchen."

Re: Talk/Study

[identity profile] cameronmitchell.livejournal.com 2006-12-13 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
"Probably," he nodded. "Not that Angel himself actually has much use for it."

"He can still eat food if he wants to, can't he?" Molly had always assumed so.

Re: Talk/Study

[identity profile] cameronmitchell.livejournal.com 2006-12-13 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
"I never asked," Cameron admitted. "I don't know? I kind of don't want to think about it too much because ew."

Re: Talk/Study

[identity profile] bruiser-in-pink.livejournal.com 2006-12-13 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Molly snickered and wrinkled her nose. "Yeah, it is kind of. I'll just ask if I can use the kitchen. I won't bring up his eating habits."

Re: Talk/Study

[identity profile] cameronmitchell.livejournal.com 2006-12-13 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
"Maybe you should ask, just so we know," he suggested.

Re: Talk/Study

[identity profile] bruiser-in-pink.livejournal.com 2006-12-13 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
"Maybe I'll just offer him a cookie and see what he does," Molly said with a nod.
