Monday, December 4, First Period

There are plenty of bakery items and hot beverages laid out, but the classroom appears to have been rearranged. The chairs and tables are moved to the walls, leaving the center of the room open.

"Good morning, everyone! I want to remind you all that I will be leaving briefly for an assignment. In my absence, Dr Wilson will be conducting class, with the assistance of my TAs. Now today, in lieu of a regular lecture, we're instead going to be rehearsing for the pageant on Friday."

"Pageant parts are already cast," Anders countered. "Unless you're just hoping for a freebie."

"You wish you could afford me," Anders replied.

Bel shrugged a little. "I have expensive tastes," he said. "And if I see something I want, I take it."

"And I swear we've been over this before, too," Anders replied, leafing through the sheet music. "So what happened to you yesterday, anyway? Last I saw you was in the lobby and then you disappeared."

Bel winced. "I went to Efferton Manor," he said. "Shimmered in to get Phoebe."

"And did you get out?" asked Anders.

Yes, he'd noticed the wince. No, he wasn't going to let it slide.

"'Course I did!" Bel said, glaring a little. "I'm here, aren't I?"

"Uh huh." Anders looked a little like a large predatory spider or something. "I just notice you didn't mention shimmering back out . . ."

"I did," Bel said. "Eventually."

"Eventually," Anders echoed, his smirk broadening. "Get sidetracked?"

"I had a little difficulty, okay?" Bel said. "There were a lot of trolls there."

Anders kept smirking. "Define difficulty."

He didn't know why he was admitting it, but it wasn't like it hadn't been on the radio, after all. "They hit me over the head and stuffed me in a closet," he growled.

Not that Anders listened to the radio.

"They stuffed you where?"

"Yes," Bel said through clenched teeth.

"Congratulations," Anders said in a mock-sweet tone. "Maybe I should get you a present."

Seriously, sometimes Anders didn't know when to stop.

Anders raised an eyebrow calmly. "Oh, fine, fine, we can keep it low key."

Bel's foot shot out as he tried to kick Anders's chair out from under him.

Anders tried to scoot his chair out of the way. Really, he did. Instead he scooted it right where Bel could kick it out from under him very easily.

And ended up flat on his back for it. Ow.
