Biology, Period 3, 11/28

Elliot handed out a thick packet as the students walked in.

"Hi. Today is botany day, which I know you have all been out of your minds with excitement for. It is the scientific study of plantlife, from the structural level to their purpose in the universe. Today, you're going to be looking at the structures." She explained the structural components and physiology of plants, only blushing a little as she talked about plant reproduction.

"We did a kind of casual dissection last week -- and thanks for cooking turkey for everyone, Jamie, it was only sort of gross -- but this week you're going to do it more seriously."

Elliot started tossing large hibiscus blossoms and small apples at the students, wincing if any hit their marks. "I want you to pair up, and we'll walk through dissections of the flower and the fruit. You're going to be looking at, um, the reproductive structures and kind of comparing and contrasting them. Make sure to fill in your lab reports."

Dissect flowers and fruits. In pairs. Riskiest class ever!

Willow got ready to dissect things and looked around for a partner.

"Is this the point we start singing songs from cheesy 80's movies?" Isabel asked.

"If you want," Willow said. "Though I'm more of a whistler or a hummer."

"That's okay, I'll pass. Somehow I don't want to be mentioned on the radio that I was bouncing about singing Where does the pollen go?," she laughed. "You know that would rate a dirty?"

"Now you've got me wondering about the birds and the bees in Fandom and I'm a little bit scared," Willow said.

"Good point. Although I didn't really notice anything too unusual last Spring," Isabel said. "But then again I never did go back into preserve then. Who knows what the trees were up to?"

"Oh, this one I know!" Willow said. "Dancing. Sorta. But it was fun for all as far as I could tell."

Oddly Isabel was not surprised. "We have dancing trees? Do they at least have good taste in music?"

"I brought some with me," Willow said. "Music, I mean. And it wasn't so much the actual trees as tree spirits but that's close enough for government work, right?"

"I'm not going to argue the difference," she said with a shrug. "Just tell me, are they friendly?"

"Oh yes," Willow said. "Quite pleasant and friendly. Good dancers too."

"You'll have to introduce me one day. They sound like fun." Isabel eyed the apple and the Hibiscus. "So which one do you want to dissect first?"

"Apple," Willow said. "Alphabetical, and also has the cute star in the middle."

"Works for me," Isabel agreed with a smile. "Should I just cut it half then?"

"Please," Willow said. "I think I've known you long enough to trust you with the knife."

"I promise not to take as much joy in this," she said as she carefully split the apple in half. "As Alanna did carving the turkeys on Thanksgiving."

"It's like they were still alive or something," Willow said. She paused. "They weren't, right? I'm pretty sure there would've been screaming otherwise."

"No, those turkeys were officially dead. Although the possibility of zombie turkeys was always there," Isabel said seriously. "At which point I would hope that Dean and Sam jumped up on the table and did there thing. With a minimum of damage to the turkey meat of course."

"Besides, wasn't the turkey already brined?" Willow asked. "That'd cover the salt issue."

Parker's recent experiments with orchids, and her dissection of the hibiscus lead to one inevitable conclusion: her plants were sex maniacs.

"At least the demon hybrid is explained...."

Peter prepared the petalled plants for productive prodding while peering for a partner.

Zack poked at the flowers with a scalpel while he waited for a partner. Bones were more his thing.

Briar was just enjoying getting to cut something open.
