World History in a Nutshell

Xlass today was held in the DangerShop, as the class had *handwavily* been informed. It was set up to look like a 1930s classroom, with posters on the walls. At the back were small suitcases and boxes.

"Okay, first of all, I have to apologise for missing class," said Daniel, looking very sheepish. "In light of that, I've changed the syllabus slightly and today we're going to look at a part of World War II."

"World War II is generally regarded as starting in 1939, although there are those who would argue that other defining moments caused it. But on September 3rd of that year, the Prime Minister of Great Britain, Neville Chamberlain, declared war on Germany two days after German troops invaded Poland. The BBC has a special report on the day the war began which you can explore and look at if you like."

"Now. After Poland fell, Germany paused to regroup during the winter of 1939-1940 until April 1940, while the British and French stayed on the defensive. The period was referred to by journalists as "the Phony War" or the "Sitzkrieg" because so little ground combat took place.

"During this time,
Operation Pied Piper
took place. This was the evacuation of Britain's cities and was the biggest and most concentrated mass movement of people in Britain's history. In the first four days of September 1939, nearly 3,000,000 people were transported from towns and cities in danger from enemy bombers to places of safety in the countryside.

"Today, I want you to pretend that you're evacuees," he said, handing everyone a label, an identification card and a ration book, along with a sheet on rationing.

"The British government recommended that in addition to their gas mask and identity card the evacuees had the following items:

Boys:

+ 2 vests (Undershirts)
+ 2 pairs of pants (Underpants)
+ Pair of trousers (Pants)
+ 2 pairs of socks
+ 6 handkerchiefs
+ Pullover or jersey (Sweater)

Girls:

+ Vest
+ Pair of knickers
+ Petticoat
+ 2 pairs of stockings
+ 6 handkerchiefs
+ Slip
+ Blouse
+ Cardigan

Both:

o Overcoat or mackintosh

+ Comb
+ 1 pair of Wellington boots
+ Towel
+ Soap
+ Facecloth
+ Toothbrush
+ Boots or shoes
+ Plimsolls
+ Sandwiches
+ Packet of nuts and raisins
+ Dry biscuits
+ Barley sugar (rather than sugar)
+ Apple

"All of these items can be found in trunks behind the suitcases, so let's see if you can pack all of this into the suggested suitcase."

Once this was done, the scene was changed so that there were no longer any desks around. "Imagine you've been on a train or a bus for hours on end, with no clue where you're going," said Daniel. "Now you've been shepparded into this unfamiliar place and you're tired and hungry and don't know what's going on.

"It's time for you to be chosen by someone to take you home."

It was mostly women who appeared, looking curiously over the entire class and "I'll take that one" was a very used phrase.

Once it was over, Daniel ended the program. "This was just a glimpse at what the Home Front was like for children. Some of them had happy experiences in being evacuated; others were less fortunate. I'd like for you to all do some research this week and write an essay on another aspect of life at home in Britain during World War II, for example, the Land Girls or you could look further into rationing. Thank you guys, and have a great week.
