World Religions, Wednesday, 2nd Period [11/22]

One might wonder why the religion teacher has a busted lip and what looks to be the beginning of a black eye. From the forbidding look on said religion teacher's face, one might want to keep one's questions to oneself on that particular matter.

Jesse is awake. He has no coffee. He doesn't have his feet propped on his desk, and there are no handouts to go with today's class.

Instead he watches the class file in, and stands up when everyone is settled in.

"Mornin'. So, tomorrow's Turkey Day. If you're an American, you know it's a secular celebration of food. They'll tell you in grade school that it's somethin' else. Honoring the pilgrims and all that happy horseshit.

"It's about the food."

He rests his hip against his desk and tousles his already tousled hair. "Since I've already shot the syllabus to shit, and I've had a long coupla weeks, we're gonna throw it out for now. I'll save Christianity for near the end, when we're comin' up on one of the religion's big days.

"Instead, what I want you to do today is to think waaaay back to the beginnin' of the year when y'all made up your own religions and tried to sell your buddy on it.

"Today you're gonna come up with a high holy day for your religion. Food? The first grape stompin' of the year? Holy day of the great beatdown? I want your holy day, how it's celebrated, what colors, sacred items, or clothes are associated with it. You can do that with someone and I'll come by and listen in, or you can do it on your own and give me a report, your choice.

"There's a point to this. Really."

Hmmm. High holy day for a religion in which she was the center of the universe.

Her birthday would be obvious, but she doesn't actually know when that is. She'll have to think on this one.

"That religions are supposed to be overly complicated?"

"The religions are supposed to have deep, spiritual meaning. Otherwise, someone will go, 'oh, well I like bacon, so I'm going to eat bacon on your holiday instead of pudding'."

The only thing Chad could really remember about his religion was virgins, organic food, and a slightly blushing Blair. It was way, way too easy thinking of what the high holy day would be, and it was probably way, way inappropriate for an academic setting.

He idly set to the task of outlining the details for his religion's annual de-virginizing orgy, and all the colours, sacred items, and (lack of) clothes required for it.

If Jesse were able to read minds, which thankfully for Chad, he cannot, he would wholeheartedly approve of Chad's holy day.

He's just that kind of preacher.

Kaylee decided that strawberries would be a very important part of her religion's holy day.

Gwynn smiled. "A little confused about holidays and such, and wondering about doing this assignemtn. See, Nadia's religion was so neat I dropped mine and said I would join hers," she grinned.

"As I understand it, Thanksgiving just gives people an excuse to eat a lot," Kaylee said, shrugging. "You can join my religion if ya want, though it probably ain't as excitin' as Nadia's."

"Zuko told me it was people celebrating some people having dinner."

That made a lot more sense to her than the Turkey thing people were celebrating.

"Sure, I can join yours. What is it?"

"See, an excuse to eat," Kaylee repeated. "My religion centers around mechanics."

"Somethin' like that," Kaylee said, grinning. "The trace compression block engine would be a good holy grail. Haven't figured out the holy day part of it though. Except it'll involve strawberries."

Billy scratched his head. His religion had been centered around Gourd, God of the earth and plants. Everything came down to plants. So, there were two main holidays that would make the most sense. Harvest Time, and when Spring rolled around.

Harvest would be a week long festival with, naturally food. It would happen in the first week of November. No meat was to be consumed for that week, it was all vegetables and fruit, and nuts and berries and such.

Spring, with the return of life to the trees would also be a week long festival, and happen the first week of April. He was stuck on how to celebrate it though.
