Through a Glass Darkly: Spies and Spying; Week 11 - Period 3

"Good morning, all," Aly said with bright smile to the class.  "If you can hand in your papers from last week when you sign in, that would be fabulous."

She sat down on the front edge of her desk and looked more serious.  "These past few weeks we've talked about putting together a cover, a legend to help you infiltrate places you need to go.  In an optimal world, this will always work and you'll be able to get the information you need without incident and slip out again, none the wiser.  Of course, in an optimal world, we spies would probably not actually be needed anymore so I, at least, am thankful."

"There's always the possibility of getting caught on a mission.  I don't think this should come as a shock to any of you.  That's why the person going undercover rarely knows the whole plan, and the spymaster rarely gets to actually go in the field.  Getting caught is always a risk no matter how good you are."

Aly stroked the beads at her throat pensively.  "But we're not going to talk about those possible consequences today too much.  Today we're talking about interrogation.  How to perform interrogations and how to resist them."

She took two handouts from her desk and started to hand them out.  "The first handout is a general overview of interrogation with a bias towards the laws of the United States.  The second is a detailing of different interrogation techniques.  You'll find some work better than others, but you want to be aware of all the angles so you can see when you're being played."

"There are some basic language and techniques that I want to go through before starting you all off on your exercise," Aly said, going back to sit on the front on her desk.

"When you're eliciting information, you learn what the person wants to tell you.  Interrogating is getting the information they'd prefer to keep secret.  The general guide to interrogation is to start off by asking questions - obviously.  If you don't believe what you're being told, ask more specific questions, ask the same question in different ways, try to find discrepancies or oddities in the story.  You want to make it in your target's best interest to give you information, and then, if that doesn't work, threats are always a possibility."  She smiled.  "I personally prefer to work in the opposite direction.  People soon learn how nice I can be when I get what I want."  She looked very, very sweet and innocent.

"We've talked about lying well and signs of lying before so be sure to keep an eye out for that.  What I've done now is split the class into two groups - interrogators and those being interrogated.  Partner up and see if you can make your target spill their guilt.  This is a different technique from when we did the recruiting exercise a few weeks ago, but there are similarities so keep that in mind."

Molly sat patiently and waited to be interrogated.

Setsuna pulled up a chair and sat in front of Molly, leaning on the desk assumingly between them with her best stone-cold face. "Hello, Molly," she said, latching her eyes onto her.

Setsuna had stategicly went for the only girl on the to-be-interrogated list. She had more experience with females for this sort of thing, as they were mostly what she worked with. And she figured she could be vitually unfappable in the face of a female, while boys just had her too nervous in general.

Molly gave Setsuna a bright grin. "Hi! How are you today?" Confusion was the way to go. Molly figured if she refused to admit she was being interrogated, it would be harder to get anything out of her.

Ah-ha. The bright grin routine. Ha, Setsuna was (or could be, when she set her mind to it) impervious to the bright grin routine. She started drumming her fingers on the desktop, slowly, never breaking a steady beat. "Oh, I'm fine," she said, with a quirk of her eyebrow. "How are you?"

"Oh, I'm very good. I only have one class after this and then no more classes until next Monday," Molly said, still grinning. "I love long holidays, don't you?"

Ohhh, she was good at this whole diversionary tactic thing, wasn't she? Setsuna stopped drumming her fingers aburptly, slapping her palm down on the desk. "Let's stop beating around the bush here, Miss Hayes. You have information. I want it. And we're not going anywhere until I get it."

Setsuna was always fond of the direct approach in such matters.

Molly tilted her head and blinked innocently at Setsuna. "What do you want to know?"

"Where are you keeping them, Hayes?" Setsuna leaned forward with her demand. "Don't try that doe-eyed innocence on me. We know you know. Tell us now, and we can make this real easy."

Molly pulled back a little, giving Setsuna a wary look. "Why do you need to know? I mean," she added quickly with a shake of her head, "where what is?"

Setsuna smirked, letting Molly know that she wasn't going to let a slip like that...slip. "As if you really need to ask. You know very well why we need this information. And, if you're willing to give it to us now, simple and easy, we can both avoid a lot of trouble. I think you know what I mean..." She gave a narrowing of her eyes, suggesting quite the danger.

Molly gazed at Setsuna speculatively. Then she crossed her arms over her chest. "No, I don't think I'll tell you."

"Oh? And why not?"

Re: SAS 11/21 - Interrogations

Molly examined her fingernails. "Because I don't want to. They're mine. Why should I give them to you?"

"Because bad things will happen if you do not," Setsuna said, without batting an eye. She could play that casual-calm game, too, though she was starting to get a little worried. She was much better at sneaking information than just coming out and demanding it. She should have done a different approach, but she couldn't change her mind now.

Molly knew there was no real threat, but it was fun to play along.

She gave Setsuna a slightly panicked look. "You don't mean..." She let the question hang there.

"I do." Setsuna nodded gravely. This was more like it. She also left exactly what the threat was hanging; what someone always conceived was greater than the reality, more often than not, so it was best to keep it unsaid for as long as possible. Plus, she didn't know what it was yet. "And then where would you be?"

Clasping her hands nervously, Molly gave a deep sigh. "What do you want to know?" she asked quietly.

"I already told you," Setsuna said, clasping her hands as well, in front of her on the desk as she leaned forward, imploring Molly. "I want to know where it is; where it is being hidden. You know what I'm talking about."

At least, she hoped so, because Setsuna still didn't have an idea.

Molly stared down at her hands and pressed her lips together briefly, as if she would resist again. But then she spoke, her tone one of total defeat. "Under my bed. In my room." She looked up a Setsuna again. "But, I still don't know why you want my old hat collection. I mean, I know I don't wear them anymore, but I still want to keep them. Why do you want a bunch of hats with ears and animal faces anyway?"

She made it through that without laughing, but she couldn't hold back a small grin. She quickly looked back down at her hands.

Re: SAS 11/21 - Interrogations

[identity profile] bound2blade.livejournal.com 2006-11-21 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, yeah. Very difficult with the not-laughing thing once "it" was revealed. Setsuna let out a snort before she could even begin to hold it back, pressing her lips together tightly and turning pink from the effort. Don't laugh, don't laugh, just keep rolling with that. You're the mean, unfappable interrogator, remember? Oh, God, but the whole fact that she was going to try to run with it just wanted to make her go off into peels of giggles, especially since she could use a good laugh right now.

She took in a deep breath. "Dammit, Hayes!" Setsuna struck the desk, trying to reassume her menacing facade, but it was a mix of acted anger and beginnings of laughs. She fought them. "You know perfectly well..." Snort. "..why we need those hats." She bit her lip. "They're crucial...crucial to the State of the Union!"

Setsuna didn't actually know what that phrase meant, but it didn't really matter. She was too busy holding her hand to her mouth, trying not to giggle, and passing it off that she was just that infuriated with her interogee that she was sputtering.

Molly swallowed a laugh when she heard Setsuna snort. She quickly slapped a hand over her mouth to hold in the giggles.

"No, I don't know!" she snapped back. Well, she tried to snap at Setsuna anyway. The effect was kind of ruined by the half laugh that followed her words. "Who knows what weird things you government people have planned for my hats." She schooled her features into a pout and crossed her arms over her chest again. "You probably just want them for one of your crazy parties."

Setsuna gasped. "How..." Snerk "How did you knowwwwww?"

"You think I'm working alone? We're on to you." Molly let herself grin, but she had to pause to keep the laughter from bubbling up again.

"Searching my room will do you no good. Even now, the hats are on their way to somewhere safe. You'll never get your hands on them." Molly laughed mockingly. Which was too much for her. The laugh tapered off into a giggle she couldn't stop.

Setting her folded arms on the table, she buried her face in them and giggled uncontrollably.

Setsuna buried a red, giggling face behind her hand. "Oh, maaaan, I think we blew it."

Still giggling, Molly lifted her head to grin at Setsuna. "I'm sorry, I couldn't resist."
