Through a Glass Darkly: Spies and Spying; Week 11 - Period 3

"Good morning, all," Aly said with bright smile to the class.  "If you can hand in your papers from last week when you sign in, that would be fabulous."

She sat down on the front edge of her desk and looked more serious.  "These past few weeks we've talked about putting together a cover, a legend to help you infiltrate places you need to go.  In an optimal world, this will always work and you'll be able to get the information you need without incident and slip out again, none the wiser.  Of course, in an optimal world, we spies would probably not actually be needed anymore so I, at least, am thankful."

"There's always the possibility of getting caught on a mission.  I don't think this should come as a shock to any of you.  That's why the person going undercover rarely knows the whole plan, and the spymaster rarely gets to actually go in the field.  Getting caught is always a risk no matter how good you are."

Aly stroked the beads at her throat pensively.  "But we're not going to talk about those possible consequences today too much.  Today we're talking about interrogation.  How to perform interrogations and how to resist them."

She took two handouts from her desk and started to hand them out.  "The first handout is a general overview of interrogation with a bias towards the laws of the United States.  The second is a detailing of different interrogation techniques.  You'll find some work better than others, but you want to be aware of all the angles so you can see when you're being played."

"There are some basic language and techniques that I want to go through before starting you all off on your exercise," Aly said, going back to sit on the front on her desk.

"When you're eliciting information, you learn what the person wants to tell you.  Interrogating is getting the information they'd prefer to keep secret.  The general guide to interrogation is to start off by asking questions - obviously.  If you don't believe what you're being told, ask more specific questions, ask the same question in different ways, try to find discrepancies or oddities in the story.  You want to make it in your target's best interest to give you information, and then, if that doesn't work, threats are always a possibility."  She smiled.  "I personally prefer to work in the opposite direction.  People soon learn how nice I can be when I get what I want."  She looked very, very sweet and innocent.

"We've talked about lying well and signs of lying before so be sure to keep an eye out for that.  What I've done now is split the class into two groups - interrogators and those being interrogated.  Partner up and see if you can make your target spill their guilt.  This is a different technique from when we did the recruiting exercise a few weeks ago, but there are similarities so keep that in mind."

[OOC: And plz to be waiting for ze OCD is UP!]

Seely his best to look intimidating as he waited for a partner.

Kaoru looked down the list of interrogators to see who was still free.
"Need someone to question?" Kaoru folded his arms across his chest and shifted his stance.

slow due to class and driving, if you don't mind..

"That I do," Seely grinned, before adopting a more serious expression.

"Name?"

Kaoru considered this for a moment before answering, "Hikaru Hitachiin." He replied, doing an innocent check to see if Seely was paying attention to those lists and could tell he was fibbing.

Weiss crossed his arms, daring anybody to try to get anything out of him.

Anders suppressed a little internal "meep" and tried to put himself into the headspace that usually went with a Pyramid faceoff and an "I dare you to try and get this ball away from me." Only substituting "information" for "ball."

Hikaru was a little disappointed with how the lists had panned out and that his victim had run so quickly. Oh well, he'd just have fun with someone else. "How's it going?" He asked casually.

"Not bad," Anders said as noncommittally as he could, hoping nobody would ask him about whatever incriminating rumors had been going around about him on the radio lately thanks in part to a certain Spies and Spying teacher.

Fortunately for him, little that went on during the radio broadcasts seemed to interest the twins very much, and all Hikaru could remember about Anders at the moment was that he liked chocolate... a lot...
"Mind being my partner?"

Molly sat patiently and waited to be interrogated.

Setsuna pulled up a chair and sat in front of Molly, leaning on the desk assumingly between them with her best stone-cold face. "Hello, Molly," she said, latching her eyes onto her.

Setsuna had stategicly went for the only girl on the to-be-interrogated list. She had more experience with females for this sort of thing, as they were mostly what she worked with. And she figured she could be vitually unfappable in the face of a female, while boys just had her too nervous in general.

Molly gave Setsuna a bright grin. "Hi! How are you today?" Confusion was the way to go. Molly figured if she refused to admit she was being interrogated, it would be harder to get anything out of her.

Ah-ha. The bright grin routine. Ha, Setsuna was (or could be, when she set her mind to it) impervious to the bright grin routine. She started drumming her fingers on the desktop, slowly, never breaking a steady beat. "Oh, I'm fine," she said, with a quirk of her eyebrow. "How are you?"

"Oh, I'm very good. I only have one class after this and then no more classes until next Monday," Molly said, still grinning. "I love long holidays, don't you?"

[identity profile] bound2blade.livejournal.com 2006-11-21 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Ohhh, she was good at this whole diversionary tactic thing, wasn't she? Setsuna stopped drumming her fingers aburptly, slapping her palm down on the desk. "Let's stop beating around the bush here, Miss Hayes. You have information. I want it. And we're not going anywhere until I get it."

Setsuna was always fond of the direct approach in such matters.

[identity profile] bruiser-in-pink.livejournal.com 2006-11-21 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Molly tilted her head and blinked innocently at Setsuna. "What do you want to know?"

"Where are you keeping them, Hayes?" Setsuna leaned forward with her demand. "Don't try that doe-eyed innocence on me. We know you know. Tell us now, and we can make this real easy."

Schrodinger stretched his arms behind his head and tried not to snicker at the idea of someone trying to interrogate him.

Teddy walked over toward Schrodinger and asked brightly, "Want to be interrogated?"

It was a cunning plan, you see. The worst interrogator going after the person least likely to spill anything. A very cunning plan. So cunning that not even Teddy knew about it.

Schrodinger shrugged. "Sure. Bring it on."

"Cool," Teddy replied, far too happy. Holidays did that.

"So, what did you do?"

"You know when." Because Teddy? Not a clue.
