Criminal Justice [first period, Tuesday 11/14]

Students had been handwave alerted to the fact that the class would be held in the Danger Shop today, and so V was waiting for them when they all filed in.

"Good morning," V said as the simulation immediately placed them in the spacious, white lobby of a building. "Today, we'll be doing a tactical simulation. You and the partner you chose last week have a mission: to find the control room at the top of the tower. In it, there is a ticking device, which will have quite an impact on the entire city if you don't stop it. And no, the lifts aren't working. Your mission, young ones, is to make your way to the control room while dodging guards and personnel, and disengage the device using only your available resources, and to do so by the end of the period."

He tilted his head. "And for now, that means wits and no weapons, though you all do get maps of the building. Oh, and a final thing. The building is not empty. This is a business. The civilians haven't any idea what's going on, though, and you mustn't panic them. You may, however, ask them for assistance in such a way as to not alert them to the situation."

V clapped his hands once, and then retreated to fully start the simulation. He didn't want to be in it, if old friends showed up.

Teddy flailed. "See, in my experience, bombs are never considered to be 'no problem.' Ever."

Kawalsky pulled the Swiss Army Knife he'd received from Shop class last semester and used it to start to open the wire casing. "This is where the whole 'guns and explosives' training thing helps. Yeah, sure, I was taught how to put stuff together to make it explode, but the other half of the training is learning how to identify bombs and disable them so no one gets hurt. Not my favorite part of the job, but it makes for good conversation." He traced the wires back to the different parts of the bomb. "Now see, this bomb's pretty basic. Homemade by the look of it. That means it's likely to go up in our faces if we're not careful. What we've gotta do," he showed Teddy what he was doing since this was just about the only thing he was really good at. "Is make sure the wire connecting the timer to the detonator are severed. Then the spark can't get from one place to another, can't set the explosives off and can't blow us up." He looked at it for a few moments.

Teddy looked at the bomb, trying to keep out of Kawalsky's way. Bumping someone who was trying to stop a very large explosive from going off really wasn't high on his list of things to do.

"Explosives training I wouldn't mind. Guns, on the other hand, no."

Charlie kept working. "I get not wanting to know how to use 'em to kill someone else, or even hurt 'em, but it's good to know what you're up against. If you know what kind of firearm the enemy's using, you can tell how much ammo it can hold before they have to reload or what range it's got."

Not if the some of the guns don't use bullets.

Teddy leaned against the wall, arms crossed as he watched Kawalsky work. "I get your point, but it doesn't make me all that eager to learn."

Kawalsky shrugged. "If you ever change your mind..." He let the thought trail off because he was a pain in the ass when it came to talk of weapons and a moron who felt the need to have the last word sometimes.

With a flick of the knife, the timer froze. "Either that worked or we're about to get blown up without warning."

Teddy waited a moment. "Well, since we're not small explodey pieces, I'm gonna say that it worked."

He held his hand up for a high-five. "Go X-Unit!"

Kawalsky returned the high-five with a grin. "X-Unit saves the day."
