Criminal Justice [first period, Tuesday 11/14]

Students had been handwave alerted to the fact that the class would be held in the Danger Shop today, and so V was waiting for them when they all filed in.

"Good morning," V said as the simulation immediately placed them in the spacious, white lobby of a building. "Today, we'll be doing a tactical simulation. You and the partner you chose last week have a mission: to find the control room at the top of the tower. In it, there is a ticking device, which will have quite an impact on the entire city if you don't stop it. And no, the lifts aren't working. Your mission, young ones, is to make your way to the control room while dodging guards and personnel, and disengage the device using only your available resources, and to do so by the end of the period."

He tilted his head. "And for now, that means wits and no weapons, though you all do get maps of the building. Oh, and a final thing. The building is not empty. This is a business. The civilians haven't any idea what's going on, though, and you mustn't panic them. You may, however, ask them for assistance in such a way as to not alert them to the situation."

V clapped his hands once, and then retreated to fully start the simulation. He didn't want to be in it, if old friends showed up.

"Yup. And it's probably not an alarm clock," Jack replied, studying it carefully. "Any ideas?"

"Green means go, red means stop," John said, thinking out loud. "Except, wouldn't that be too easy?"

"Just what I was thinking." Jack delicately ran a finger along the wires and then flashed John a grin. "But if we assume one makes it go boom - or turn into a dancing bunny, or whatever weird thing's going to happen - and one makes it stop," he mused. "What if we pull both together?"

"Sorta like cancelling each other out?" John asked.

"Maybe." Jack spared a moment to add defusing bombs to the list of things he was going to get Sam to teach him. "But we pick one, we've got a 50/50 chance it'll be the wrong one. Pull both, and at least we know we've got the right one. Just with a little bit extra."

John nodded. "I think we should try. I mean, the teacher can't really blow us up. Wanna cut or me?"

"I hope not," Jack mumbled then shook his head. "Me. My idea, I'll do the cutting." It suddenly occurred to him that he was missing something. "Got a pair of wire cutters?"

John grimaced. "Scissors? Pocket knife? I have those."

"I think knife." Jack held out his hand.

John produced the knife from his pocket and handed it over. "Good luck."

The corner of his mouth quirked up in a smile. "Thanks."

Jack wrapped the wires once around his pinky, then around his thumb so he had a taut length and flicked open the knife. "You might want to stand back," he told John as he closed his eyes and sliced cleanly through both wires.

John scrambled backwards.

Jack cracked open one eye, then opened both of them wide as the ticky thing started ticking incredibly fast. "Uh oh."

He only made it a few feet away before the thing exploded, liberally spraying the room with a shower of glitter.

"Oops," John said, blinking glitter out of his eyes. "Well, that didn't work."

Re: Defuse the device

[identity profile] anextimeagent.livejournal.com 2006-11-15 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
Jack blew out a mouthful of glitter and snickered. "Nope. Note for the future - don't listen to my ideas," he said, shaking his head to get the glitter out of his hair.

"It wasn't a bad idea," John said, brushing more glitter out of his eyes. "Just too creative. Maybe green really did mean go."

Re: Defuse the device

[identity profile] anextimeagent.livejournal.com 2006-11-15 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
Jack folded the now rather glittery knife and handed it back. "Yup. It probably did. But we'll know for next time."

Re: Defuse the device

[identity profile] whitedeathpod.livejournal.com 2006-11-15 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
John took the knife. "It was fun though!"

Re: Defuse the device

[identity profile] anextimeagent.livejournal.com 2006-11-15 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
"Totally," Jack agreed. "And I've heard some stories about glitter, if you want to make it even more fun," he offered, trying very hard not to laugh.

Re: Defuse the device

[identity profile] whitedeathpod.livejournal.com 2006-11-15 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
"Of course you have," John said and blew some glitter toward him. "What kinda stories?"

Re: Defuse the device

"Glitter heralds boykissy," he started to explain as they walked out of the room. "Apparently it's a long standing tradition, dating back, oh, years, even. And sometimes there's flags."

And he continued expounding on the link between glitter and boykissy as they made their way down the stairs, trailing glitter behind them.
