Students had been ~~handwave~~ alerted to the fact that the class would be held in the Danger Shop today, and so V was waiting for them when they all filed in.

"Good morning," V said as the simulation immediately placed them in the spacious, white lobby of a building. "Today, we'll be doing a tactical simulation. You and the partner you chose last week have a mission: to find the control room at the top of the tower. In it, there is a ticking device, which will have quite an impact on the entire city if you don't stop it. And no, the lifts aren't working. Your mission, young ones, is to make your way to the control room while dodging guards and personnel, and disengage the device using only your available resources, and to do so by the end of the period."

He tilted his head. "And for now, that means wits and no weapons, though you all do get maps of the building. Oh, and a final thing. The building is not empty. This is a business. The civilians haven't any idea what's going on, though, and you mustn't panic them. You may, however, ask them for assistance in such a way as to not alert them to the situation."

V clapped his hands once, and then retreated to fully start the simulation. He didn't want to be in it, if old friends showed up.

A woman passed by, her heels clacking on the floor, and gave Aeryn a hard look. "Do you work for me?" she asked brusquely.

Aeryn doesn't miss a beat, replying, "Possibly. It's my first day." She might have learned a thing or two in spying class.

Patricia gives her a hard look, and replies, "New interns are to report to the studio first of all. It's that way." She points with an exasperated sigh before clicking down the hallway and not bothering to check if Aeryn had understood the directions.

Aeryn looks in the direction Patricia had pointed, and wonders if she can use that cover story to get direction. It's less obvious than looking at a map. So she heads in that direction, looking in the doorways for whatever a studio might be.

Which means that one of the offices she looks into is, naturally, that of Gordon Dietrich. "Hello," he calls genially, leaning against his desk. "Are you a new assistant?"

"Yes," she lies. "I seem to have lost my way."

"Whose assistant are you?" he asks, folding his hands behind his back and heading over, looking kindly at her.

"I don't remember her name," she says, and proceeds to describe Patricia as best she can.

"Ah," Gordon says in realization. "Then you should probably find the control room. Skip the steps that the others go through." He nods out the door. "Up the stairs five floors and you can't miss it. Would you like an autograph?"

Aeryn has no idea what an autograph is. "I certainly would."

With a smile, Gordon plucks a pre-autographed headshot off his desk and hands it to her. "There you are. Run along now, and have a lovely day!"

She's going to be so confused about this later. "Thank you," she says, and leaves the office quickly, heading up the way he told her to get to the control room. Still not sure why someone would hand out pictures of themselves.

On the fourth flight, a young woman emerges through a door carrying a tray of tea. "Is she mad?" she immediately asks Aeryn. "I tried to hurry but the damn kettle broke again."

Aeryn has no idea if that's code for something. "I'm sorry?"

"I'm sorry," Evey adds, flustered. "I took you for an assistant. I'd heard there were new ones. Patricia - is she angry? She sent me off for tea ages ago."

"Um," Aeryn says. "If she's who I'm thinking of, I'd think she's always angry."

Evey smiles at that. "More than usual? Did she mention tea?"

"Not to me," she says, and remembering things like time constraints, says, "I was told to head up to the control room. I'm still going the right way?" See, she can even be polite sometimes.

"Up another flight and third door on the right," Evey tells her. "Be careful in there. My first day, I hit about seven wrong buttons with my elbow."

"Is that easy to do?" Aeryn wonders, frowning.

"If you're clumsy," she says ruefully, adjusting her hold on the tray. "Or nervous."

Not generally a problem for Aeryn. "I'll keep that in mind," she says.

With a nod, Evey says, "Good luck," and hurries down the hall.

Aeryn starts off again, headed up the stairs and following Evey's instructions towards the control room.
