Good Omens...And Bad: Prophecy in Theory and Practice, Lab Nine

Friday, November 10, Second Period

Along with the usual spread of hot drinks and pastries, there are carefully arranged boxes of little coins, sticks, and other sundry divination accoutrements.

"Today we're doing an exercise in a specific type of bibliomancy, divination through the I Ching. There are a number of ways to accomplish this, some of them quite complex. For today's lab exercise, you're going to work with your partner and these handouts. Choose a casting method and try a few passes to see what you come up with.

"There will be no homework assignment today, unless you count my expectation of seeing all of you on the bus this afternoon for our field trip."

"I'm sorry, man." Blair leaned forward and bypassed the useless question of 'how did they get his soul'. "What do they want you to do?"

"Find two parts of an amulet so far," Bel confessed. "I got the first half. I know where the second is. And they're gonna keep pushing me to do more, I know it."

"Is it an evil amulet?" Blair asked, a little confused.

"It's a good amulet," Bel clarified. "It protects from evil. The Underworld wants it out of good witches' hands and destroyed. Or perverted somehow."

"I don't pretend to know anything about magic, but can't you just give them the amulet, get back your dad's soul and have the good witches make another one?" Blair shrugged. "Or buy one? Do you buy amulets?"

"They're not going to give me back my father's soul, Blair," Bel said. "They're going to use it to hold over my head and make me do what they want until I don't care anymore and become a true demon again."

"I figured that would be too easy." Blair blinked. "Okay, so we need to steal your dad's soul back. Is it like a ghost or is it in a box or something?"

"It's trapped in an orb," Bel said, indicating the size with his hands. "About this big, kinda glowy white. I never knew Raynor had it. I knew my mother killed him, but I didn't know she'd trapped his soul."

"So he's been trapped in there for a long time?" Blair frowned. "Does he know he's trapped in an orb thingy? Is it painful?"

"Raynor said he's used it to power dark rituals," Bel said quietly. "I can't imagine that feels good."

"Sorry, man." Blair leaned foward to place his hand on Bel's arm. "How do we get him out of the orb? Do we just smash it or is there some sort of spell?"

"I'm not sure," Bel said. "There might be something in the Book of Shadows to free him, but it won't work unless I actually have it."

"So you need to figure out how to get the orb, how to get your dad out of the orb and how to make sure they don't make you do anything really horrible in the meantime." Blair said, counting off on his fingers.

"Pretty much," Bel said. "I'm supposed to get the second half of the amulet...fast. I don't know what they'll want me to do next, but it won't be good."

"Well, amulet-getting doesn't sound all that hard. Maybe it would be okay to give it to them to stall until we've got the other parts of the plan worked out."

"Yeah, that's what I'm thinking," Bel said, omitting the fact that Piper had the amulet now and was probably going to try to blow his ass up.

"So how long do you have to get the other amulet?" Blair asked. "A few days? A week?"

"As soon as possible," Bel said grimly. "That would probably be a few days. If Raynor knew I was going to Las Vegas he'd probably show up to kick my ass."

"Should you wear a disguise?" Blair dug in his backpack for a moment and pulled out a red, green and yellow beret (http://www.tysvariety.com/cityhats/images/Rasta%20Baret.JPG). "It's got sort of a 'I'm from the islands, mon' feel to it."

Bel blinked. "Uh, no, thanks, I'll pass," he said. "Any members of the Brotherhood looking for me would see right though any disguise. They'd be sensing for the demon."

"Maybe they won't be able to sense you in the midst of Las Vegas. I would think a lot of demons would hang out there."

Bel nodded. "Yeah, it's a big demon hotspot," he said. "City of Sin and all."

"See, you'll be fine. Just don't do anything to stand out and if there's any problems shimmer to Phale or something." Blair nodded.

[I would apologize but you got all cute so I'll just thwap you instead]

"Yeah, something like that'll be the plan," Bel said. "I just wanna have a good time and forget about all this for awhile."

[*giggles and deletes comment*]

"Now that, I can help with!" Blair grinned and pulled out his Gambling for Dummies book. "I've done some research."
