Criminal Justice [first period, Tuesday 11/07]

"Good morning," said V, folding his hands behind his back as students filed in. "Today is a class to which I have been looking forward for some time. Every crimefighter needs to know, specifically, what tools are at their disposal."

He rounded on the class. "Do any of you have a specific weapon you prefer? Or do you rely on wits, or your own strength? Couple this with the clothing you designed some time back. Do they coordinate? What is the reasoning behind each tool?"

He began to pace. "Furthermore, there are the tools used not in battle, but planning. Books. Maps. Technology, I suppose. What do you use to track a criminal, to succeed in the least amount of time?"

He paused, and quirked his head at the class. "This, dear class, is the lead into your final project, which will be worked upon for the remainder of the term. Please pair up. Don't automatically choose your best friend. This person will be your ally for the rest of the semester. They will be your partner, your backup - your other half, as far as this class is concerned. Today your goal is to take your various tools and resources, and see where you are lacking and where you are overdone. What can each of you bring to the partnership, and where do you need to improve?"

He clasped his hands in front of himself. "Simply form an alliance with another person in class, and bring your thoughts on crime-solving together. All right?"

Jack was spinning a pen between his fingers while he looked around for a partner.

"Hey Jack," John said, coming over. "Wanna partner up?"

"John, hey. Long time no see. Sounds good." Jack grinned and added, "Pull up a chair, let's take over the world."

"Got dreams of world domination already?" John grinned and took a seat. "So, to start off with? I'm not big on guns. I can use them but they make me nervous."

"You've got to start big," he replied, laughing. "Okay. I'm kind of fond of them myself. New to using them, but I'm a decent shot, and I'm getting better. So I'm happy to look after the guns." He thought for a minute, then said, "What I'm not so good on is hand to hand stuff. I'm supposed to be learning, but I've been slacking off on it."

"I'm actually half decent at hand to hand stuff," John answered. "Comes with living with Aeryn. I've trained with her. Also, high pain tolerance."

Jack snickered. "Now that I can believe. Amazing woman, but you're a braver man than I." He paused as a thought struck him. "Actually, that's something worth considering. He never mentioned them, but what about other people? They're not quite tools at your disposal, but they can be very handy."

"Like how?" John asked. "Like as help along the way?"

"That's what I'm thinking. They could help with planning, or getting weapons or tools or supplies. Or provide a distraction - though that's really my field of expertise," he added with a smug smile. "But if there's something we need, or need to know and don't, I don't see why we couldn't seek outside assistance."

John nodded. "Sorta like teammates, almost?"

"I guess so," he replied, frowning slightly. "I was thinking more along the lines of telling them only what they need to know to get the job done - which is a bit less than teammates - but that could work."

John nodded. "No hurting the people, right? For whatever we might be fighting for or against?"

"Which people?" Jack asked cautiously. "Allies and teammates, those I can agree to. Not hurting anyone else is going to have to be assessed on a case by case basis. Because sometimes you don't have a choice."

"Allies and teammates," John said. "Yeah, I agree with you on the other part. Like, I wouldn't wanna hurt you."

"Then we're in perfect accord. I wouldn't want you to hurt me either." Jack grinned and clapped him on the shoulder. "Mutual declarations of non-hurting are an excellent way to start a relationship, so consider it returned."

John grinned. "Good. How are you at improvisation?"

"Outstanding," he laughed. "There's something about planning everything down to the last detail that offends me. How about you?"

"Pretty damn good," he said. "I can talk for a long time too. About nothing."

"I can see how that could be extremely useful," he said, hiding a grin, because he really couldn't. "I can flirt with anything, pretty much sucessfully."

John nodded. "You do the flirting. I'd lose...valuable body parts if I did."

"I think the not hurting agreement also covers keeping you from getting hurt, so yeah, I'll take care of any flirting." Jack nodded his head decisively. "Right. So far we've got no plan beyond you talking and me flirting, and when that gets us into trouble, you're going to hit people and I'm going to shoot them." He hesitated. "Maybe that should be in reverse order?"

John laughed and nodded. "If they're aggressive, we be aggressive back. I might be able to fly an aircraft depending on the type of aircraft."

"Might?" Jack lifted an eyebrow. "Before I get into anything that's going more than three feet off the ground, I'd like to be a little more certain than 'might' that we're going to make it back in one piece. But I could probably borrow a swoop bike. Maybe."

"Depends on the type of craft," John said. "I've flown one but one doesn't equal all."

"What the hell. I've never flown anything, and you only live once. If we need to make a getaway, I'll take my chances with you," he decided. "Got any experience tracking people down? Because I guess our criminal's not going to wait somewhere in plain sight for us to find."
