"Good morning," said V, folding his hands behind his back as students filed in. "Today is a class to which I have been looking forward for some time. Every crimefighter needs to know, specifically, what tools are at their disposal."

He rounded on the class. "Do any of you have a specific weapon you prefer? Or do you rely on wits, or your own strength? Couple this with the clothing you designed some time back. Do they coordinate? What is the reasoning behind each tool?"

He began to pace. "Furthermore, there are the tools used not in battle, but planning. Books. Maps. Technology, I suppose. What do you use to track a criminal, to succeed in the least amount of time?"

He paused, and quirked his head at the class. "This, dear class, is the lead into your final project, which will be worked upon for the remainder of the term. Please pair up. Don't automatically choose your best friend. This person will be your ally for the rest of the semester. They will be your partner, your backup - your other half, as far as this class is concerned. Today your goal is to take your various tools and resources, and see where you are lacking and where you are overdone. What can each of you bring to the partnership, and where do you need to improve?"

He clasped his hands in front of himself. "Simply form an alliance with another person in class, and bring your thoughts on crime-solving together. All right?"

"Depends on the type of craft," John said. "I've flown one but one doesn't equal all."

"What the hell. I've never flown anything, and you only live once. If we need to make a getaway, I'll take my chances with you," he decided. "Got any experience tracking people down? Because I guess our criminal's not going to wait somewhere in plain sight for us to find."

"I can follow footprints?" John shrugged. "That might not be a strong suit of mine."

"Yeah, we might need some help with that one. I can usually charm people into telling me what they know, but that depends on someone actually knowing where our quarry's gone. Which might not always happen."

"Maybe I could buy a Tracking for Dummies book on ebay?"

"If ever a book was meant for us, it was that one." Jack snapped his fingers. "Ah ha! What about some sort of electronic doohickey for tracking people? Something that we could plug a sample of blood or hair or scent into and it would track them down for us."

"Like GPS for people?" John nodded, considering the idea. "Could be useful. Like one of those sniffing dogs."

"Yup. Of course, I don't know if it even exists. But if it doesn't, it should. Much better than a dog. It's less hairy, for a start," he said. "But a dog would do at a pinch. Anything else you can think of that we'd need?"

"Besides what we've talked about and the essentials, nope." He smiled and tapped his fingers on the desk. "I think we've got enough to catch a bad guy."

"Yup," Jack agreed as he resumed twirling his pen. "Now we just have to wait and see what sort of bad guy we end up having to go after."

"I hope it's not a giant bug," John said, making a face. "They're gross."

Jack gazed thoughtfully at nothing, then tipped his head sideways to grin at John. "It'd be memorable, though. I doubt we'd need a dog or an electronic doohickey to find it."

[ooc: and I duck out to grab lunch - back in about half an hour or thereabouts!]

"Ew, bugs." John shivered. "Gross."

"The grosser the better," Jack pointed out. "Anything that makes it harder for it to hide, easier for us to find, and less likely for other people to help it has to be counted as an asset."

John nodded, accepting that. "Giant cockroaches?"

Jack couldn't quite repress a grimace. "If you're offering? I'll pass."

John shivered. Again. "I hate bugs. And critters. Bugs and critters. Let's just fight robots."

A strange chill crawled up Jack's back, and he had no idea why. "Not robots. Let's stick with talking and flirting, and skip the fighting altogether. Maybe our so-called criminal will be innocent, and we can take him to the pub instead."

John nodded. "Keep the peace, huh?"

"If it means we avoid robots and giant bugs?" Jack shrugged. "Sounds like a plan to me."

"That's a plan I can get behind too," he replied.
