Cookery course is open again.

Slartibartfast goes into his classroom, takes a briefcase out of his locker, and places it carefully in the middle of the floor. He cautiously leans forward and, with the tip of one finger, flips the catch open, and leaps backwards through the door into the corridor.

Inside the room, the vast kitchen unfolds itself without a sound. Slartibartfast peers in. Everything is in order.

Okay, the cookery lab is now open for the next three days or so. I'll be around intermittently with advice and help, but if I'm not about please feel free to come in, attempt some cookery, and help out your fellow cooks.

It's open for students, teachers and other staff, without a requirement to have previously registered.

Please remember what I said before: Anyone seen attempting to cook or eat one of the other students or staff will be given an instant detention.

Also bear in mind that my colleagues [livejournal.com profile] principalconnor and [livejournal.com profile] jerusalem_s have had a few things to say about weapons, and I'm sure the two of them will take a dim view of things if any of these knives find their way out of my classroom. As indeed will I.

I'm sure I can trust you all to behave if I'm not here. Enjoy your cooking.

*comes in. Gets Bagoas comfortable. Unloads a lump of cooked meat, some vegetables, a few jars and a loaf of dark bread.*

I figured we couldn't go wrong with sterkl salad sandwiches.
And Slatri says I need to work on my chopping technique.

*chops meat into little cubes, and starts on ribbed vegetables.*

*dumps all of it into bowl and consults readout. Measures stuff from jars*

*lays leaf vegetables on bread, mounds sterkl salad on them*

*brings sandwiches to table*

Try one.

*takes a small bite, curious* *eyes widen*

*waits to swallow before speaking* Is good.

Better be. It's the only thing my ma left me.

*half grin*

Sterkls are birds. Big fat birds, about as tall as my knee. Granddad usta raise 'em.

Soon as I learn how, I'll fry one up for us.

After the explosion last week, Slarti ain't too eager to let me play with boiling oil.

Explosion? You blew up kitchen?

[identity profile] 12parseckessel.livejournal.com 2005-09-21 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, just a dozen pasties. Birdocs from home don't mix with Earth garlic.

Took me hours to scrub out the oven.

*grin*

Plenty of ways, but fried is my favorite.

Followed real close by boiled and chopped and in a sandwich.

*holds his up*

If you mean the round thing that made a bid for freedom, it's under the edge of the counter.

Like I said, professor, start small.

Maybe next time I'll try something that requires heat.

Thursday, mid-morning

Professor Slartibartfast? Several of my teachers have gone AWOL and I wondered if I could join your cooking class.

Thank you, sir.

Unfortunately, I didn't bring any food as I wasn't sure what would already be available. I do have some basic ingredients in my dorm room, however, and if you'll allow me a moment, I can return with them.

I'll be right back

::hurries out and returns about 10 minutes later with a pint of milk, a small block of cheddar cheese, a packet of chicken breasts, 2 tomatos and half a loaf of wheat bread::

Given these ingredients, what would you reccommend I attempt, sir?

::smiles::

I just brought what I had in my fridge, sir. Also, I have very little cooking experience beyond sandwiches, so I think that I would prefer to start with whichever sauce is the simpler to make.

Thank you sir.

Thursday, instead of speech class

[identity profile] miss-monochrome.livejournal.com 2005-09-22 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, hey teach. The Big Guy said this class was open and since my speech one's pretty much no go today I thought maybe I'd join? I'm a pretty good cook back where I'm from but, uh, I'm not too sure on the stuff they eat here.... though I'm guessing the stuff in the cafeteria ain't exactly normal? Anyways, me and River are havin' a party tomorrow (http://www.livejournal.com/community/fandomhighdorms/94125.html) and I wanted to maybe try and make something? Any suggestions?

Well, I'm pretty good at krawdla, smoked pronga sinew, hepatian mint stew, crispy grolack. ...But somehow I don't think I'll find that here and I kinda got here by accident so I didn't get a chance to bring any of it with me.

Crichton always used to say alot of the things we'd have tasted like, uh, "chicken?" ::shrugs:: We kinda use a lot of meats and root vegetables, if that helps. But really, I'm up to anything. ::smiles::
