Cookery course is open again.
Slartibartfast goes into his classroom, takes a briefcase out of his locker, and places it carefully in the middle of the floor. He cautiously leans forward and, with the tip of one finger, flips the catch open, and leaps backwards through the door into the corridor.
Inside the room, the vast kitchen unfolds itself without a sound. Slartibartfast peers in. Everything is in order.
Okay, the cookery lab is now open for the next three days or so. I'll be around intermittently with advice and help, but if I'm not about please feel free to come in, attempt some cookery, and help out your fellow cooks.
It's open for students, teachers and other staff, without a requirement to have previously registered.
Please remember what I said before: Anyone seen attempting to cook or eat one of the other students or staff will be given an instant detention.
Also bear in mind that my colleagues
principalconnor and
jerusalem_s have had a few things to say about weapons, and I'm sure the two of them will take a dim view of things if any of these knives find their way out of my classroom. As indeed will I.
I'm sure I can trust you all to behave if I'm not here. Enjoy your cooking.

I figured we couldn't go wrong with sterkl salad sandwiches.
And Slatri says I need to work on my chopping technique.
*chops meat into little cubes, and starts on ribbed vegetables.*
*dumps all of it into bowl and consults readout. Measures stuff from jars*
*lays leaf vegetables on bread, mounds sterkl salad on them*
*brings sandwiches to table*
Try one.

*waits to swallow before speaking* Is good.

*half grin*
Sterkls are birds. Big fat birds, about as tall as my knee. Granddad usta raise 'em.
Soon as I learn how, I'll fry one up for us.
After the explosion last week, Slarti ain't too eager to let me play with boiling oil.

Took me hours to scrub out the oven.

He looks at what's going on.
Ah, sandwiches. Truly a classic dish for many species. An old friend of mine -- an Earthman -- became a sandwichmaker ... on Lamuella, I believe. The locals thought he was some sort of Gift From Bob.
He peers into his bag.
Goodness me, it seems that I'm doing sandwiches too.
He upends his bag of stuff onto a counter. There is bread, cheese, a jar of something green, and a small handful of vegetables. An onion makes a bid for freedom, rolling off the edge of the counter and along the floor. The professor doesn't notice.
You know, I'm sure there are ways of cooking these sterkls of which you speak without resorting to the deep-fryer.

Plenty of ways, but fried is my favorite.
Followed real close by boiled and chopped and in a sandwich.
*holds his up*

The professor picks up his fourth knife -- he's already used one to cut the bread, one to spread the pesto, one to cut the cheese -- and he looks around on the counter.
Did I have an onion when I came in here?

He retrieves the onion and dices it finely, and proceeds to assemble a sandwich.
I see you've managed to cut stuff up without injury this time round.
*glances at ceiling*
And nothing exploded. Excellent.
He joins the student at the table

Maybe next time I'll try something that requires heat.

Thursday, mid-morning
Re: Thursday, mid-morning
Did you happen to bring any food with you today?
Re: Thursday, mid-morning
Unfortunately, I didn't bring any food as I wasn't sure what would already be available. I do have some basic ingredients in my dorm room, however, and if you'll allow me a moment, I can return with them.

Re: Thursday, mid-morning
::hurries out and returns about 10 minutes later with a pint of milk, a small block of cheddar cheese, a packet of chicken breasts, 2 tomatos and half a loaf of wheat bread::
Given these ingredients, what would you reccommend I attempt, sir?
Re: Thursday, mid-morning
Re: Thursday, mid-morning
I just brought what I had in my fridge, sir. Also, I have very little cooking experience beyond sandwiches, so I think that I would prefer to start with whichever sauce is the simpler to make.

Thursday, instead of speech class
Re: Thursday, instead of speech class
Re: Thursday, instead of speech class
Crichton always used to say alot of the things we'd have tasted like, uh, "chicken?" ::shrugs:: We kinda use a lot of meats and root vegetables, if that helps. But really, I'm up to anything. ::smiles::
Re: Thursday, instead of speech class
I've got oil and herbs and salt and things ... let me have a look.
*starts opening and closing cupboards*
