In case you missed the announcement yesterday: every student in the language classes needs to do an in-class presentation. There is a sign-up sheet and further instructions at my office. The presentations should be between three and five minutes long. Visuals are encouraged. Your first presentation may be in English or your native tongue; your second one, later in the semester, must be at least half in the language you are studying. (History of English students are the exception.) The subject of your presentation may be any historical or cultural aspect of the language you're studying.

Homework for all classes is study and practice your vocabulary, and prepare for your presentations.

As soon as everyone's here we'll begin the transformation.

Today we'll take a short field trip around the campus. It may be difficult to focus as you'll be experiencing many new sensations, but try to concentrate on how the campus looks compared to in your normal forms. Stay close to me at all times.

Your vocabulary quiz is on the board. The first five are French to English, the second are German to English.

We'll also begin with Spanish and Latinate languages today, simple verb conjugation and basic vocabulary.

*Hamlet starts on the quiz. He does the French perfectly, but struggles a bit with the German ones. His German translations come out a little awkward, with some of the phrases incorrect. He makes a note to himself to write to Horatio for more help with his German. He opens a notebook and starts writing after finishing the test.*

Archie does fairly well with the French vocabulary and manages to get all the English translations right, though he chews his way almost all the way through his pen to get two of the German words right.

Once he's done with that, he takes notes rather feverishly on today's lesson.

A reminder: you have a project of transcribing the speech of someone with a different accent than your own using the phonetic alphabet. This will be due a week from Thursday.

Everyone take a handout: we'll be looking at runes today. Be careful with these. They're not to be used lightly.
