Through a Glass Darkly: Spies and Spying; Week 8 - Period 3

When the students entered, the class was again set up with locks, lock picks, and the pick-pocketing training tools.  Aly was not, however, wandering around the classroom, she was up at the front, fiddling with a particularly fussy lock she'd picked up.  Best not to ask where, really.

She looked up with a smile once everyone had arrived.  "I'm very sad to say that we don't have class next week.  It's your midterm break, and I'm told there's a holiday of some sort to celebrate.  So I'm certain everyone will have a good time with that and not miss your classes in the slightest.  I, however, will miss all of you."  She winked.

"So today we're going to review the seven classes we've had thus far.  I considered a surprise test, but that seemed to be overly harsh considering the weekend some of you had."

Aly moved to the board where the pertinent points of the past seven classes were written neatly.

Introduction and Memory Games
Ten Rules to Get You Thinking
Origins of Espionage and Simple Ciphers
Lockpicking and Pick-pocketing
Evaluating Personality Types
Meeting People and Convincing Them to Like You
Telling Lies and Getting Away With Them

She quickly ran through the pertinent points of each lesson, stopping for questions when necessary and generally giving an overview of the class thus far.

"Is everyone on the same page now?  Does any one have any questions about any of the topics or how they fit together into the basics of espionage?"

After any questions were answered, she grinned.  "Right then, I have two assignments for you today.  One is to practice with lockpicks and pick-pocketing again.  If any of you have been practicing on your own?  This is where to show off.  For the second, I've divided you up into two groups.  Recruiters and Recruits.  Recruiters?  Your job is to use the skills you've learned to try to convince a recruit to join your cause.  It can be anything from a country's service to supporting a baseball go Tigers team to wearing only red on Wednesdays.  Recruits?  Make the recruiters work for it.  If there's time, switch about and let the recruits try their own skills out."

Review notes were just as important as regular notes. Setsuna scribbled them down in her usual Japanese intently.

Anders took a ton of review notes, especially on last week's class.

Yes, he was still occasionally poking himself in the arm, or holding up his hands and admiring the fact that wow, there was color and texture there instead of whitespace and the occasional bit of hashmarking.

Seely started working on his locks. He managed to get them unlocked reasonably fast.

Setsuna was very grateful for this assignment...something to keep her focused and occupied with something else. She did better with her locks than she probably would have normally if she weren't so intent on thinking just about the locks and nothing else.

Draco so wanted to just pull out his wand and unlock the locks that way but he held back. Instead he tried to do it the old fashioned muggle way and just ended up getting frustrated.

Teddy was still a bit slower than most of the class, but managed to get the locks picked. But there weren't any dances of celebration this time around.

Anders had, as it happened, been practicing his lockpicking skills a lot even though ten years or so down the line he'd just opt for making locks go 'splodey instead 'cause that was more fun. He still wasn't going to win any contests for pure speed, but he'd definitely made a lot of progress in the aptitude department. There was a lot less fumbling. Granted, there was still a lot of tongue-poking-out-between-teeth concentration going on, but at least now he knew what to listen for and what the tumblers felt like at the end of the lockpick, so even though he wasn't by any means fast see, the 'splodey way is faster he managed to get all but one of the locks open.

Weiss's ship-in-bottle skills magically translated to a more assured lockpick. Go Weiss.

Jake tried to do it with the tools and everything, but it didn't take long before he gave up. He lenghtened and hardened his right index fingernail and used that instead. It gave him much more control of what he was actually doing, and it didn't take him long to finish.

Of course the twins had been practicing, so they played their pick-pocket game after going through the locks.

Seely leant back and waited to be recruited.

Setsuna felt another sigh of relief build up inside of her. Thank God. She really wasn't up to having to actively recruit someone for things she herself was thinking of quitting. Alianne-sensei was being good to her this week, conscious of it or not. So she sat back and waited to see who would try to recruit her. Considering the list, she probably had a good idea, and was steeling herself to make it as difficult for him as possible.

Through some quick, sneaky twin business, Hikaru and Kaoru switched hair parts and swapped roles in the activity, leaving Kaoru-pretending-to-be-Hikaru to stand to the side and wait to be recruited.

Aeryn looks a little wary about being recruited for anything. Just a little.
