Intro to 21st Century American Culture - Monday - Period Five

When the students enter the classroom, they'll see that instead of Lorelai standing up at the blackboard that Marty is there instead.

Yes. You should be afraid.

"Hi guys. Ms. Gilmore-Danes had to take her son to the pediatrician for a check up today so you have to deal with me instead. And yes. I do get to hand out detentions. Fair warning."

"Today we're going to go over another television show format called 'Teen Dramas'. Typically, this is a group of friends who go to school together and suffer bizarre and weird plot twists that no normal teenager would ever go through."

"In front of you are some portable video players loaded with some examples of the TV shows in question. Please watch the clips and when we are done we will have a class excercise."

Meta Title/Actual Show Title
Vanessa Saturn/Veronica Mars
Hollywood 90068/Beverly Hills 90210
Wendy The Werewolf Stalker/Buffy the Vampire Slayer
The Valley/The OC
Leery's River/Dawson's Creek
Rescued by the Alarm/Saved by the Bell
Ninth Hell/Seventh Heaven
Two Shrubs Valley/One Tree Hill
My Life Totally Sucks/My So-Called Life
Gelmoore Gals/Gilmore Girls

Class Excercise:
"All right kids. Your class assignment is to choose a character from one of the series you just watched and for the rest of the class you will act like that character. The scenario here is that you are all in a strange high school where all of your characters have been forced to go for whatever reason and it is your first day of school. I know the scenario is unrealistic but just run with it. For giggles we'll call it Random High."

Sean gave him sad puppy eyes but not literally because ewww. "Thank you very much, sir, but I'm sure I can find something else to keep me busy."

Evie walked over and wrinkled her nose cutely at Luke. "Why do you want to stock cans? And if I tilt my head at you, will you help me take photos of, of, people in the midst of a divorce?"

Least convincing American accent ever.

"Well, you are pretty cute," Luke Sean said, "but I am waiting for my girlfriend to stop by so I can kiss her and make her squeak and run away. I will impress her with my strapping-ness and my keen ability to stack things."

Luke hadn't really been paying that much attention to the plot.

Evie almost giggled at that, but managed to look stern. For her. Which wasn't much less than Vanessa Saturn, really. "You shouldn't make girls squeak. They are empowered women, too. With stun guns!"

Evie's grasp of technology pretty much matches Luke's grasp of plot.

"You think she's going to shoot me?" Luke squeaked. "She didn't seem like the type!"

Yeah, now he was completely out of character.

"I--" Evie flailed a moment, then tried to stay in character. "I would! If you made me squeak!"

Re: Time for Role Play

[identity profile] tatooine-doofus.livejournal.com 2006-10-23 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"I don't do it on purpose," Luke said, trying to get back into character. "It's just too much...strappingness for her to handle, I think."

Re: Time for Role Play

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2006-10-23 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"Then you should definitely stack things. And, and." Evie hadn't been paying that much attention to the Geelmore Girls. "Build her a motorbike?"

Re: Time for Role Play

"Like my father did!" Luke said.

Character? What character?

Re: Time for Role Play

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2006-10-23 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"Your father built a motorbike?" Evie bounced up on her toes, thrilled. "Oh, how cool. Did he do it for a girl?"

Vanessa would totally be this into it. Totally.

Re: Time for Role Play

[identity profile] tatooine-doofus.livejournal.com 2006-10-23 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"He gave it to a girl," Luke said. "Does that count? It's in the garage."

Re: Time for Role Play

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2006-10-23 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
"It definitely counts," Evie said, and smiled mistily at him. "And now you have a girlfriend you'll make one for. That's very romantic."

She stopped, and frowned. "Oh dear. I don't think Vanessa Saturn would say that. I mean. Um. Awwwwww?"

Re: Time for Role Play

[identity profile] tatooine-doofus.livejournal.com 2006-10-23 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Luke laughed. "I'm so confused," he admitted.

Re: Time for Role Play

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2006-10-23 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"My head hurts," Evie agreed. "Was that Sean who wants to make a motorbike, or you? And did Sean's father make one for his mother? Or did your father make one for your mother?" She frowned. "And now I *do* sound like Vanessa, forgive me."

Re: Time for Role Play

[identity profile] tatooine-doofus.livejournal.com 2006-10-23 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Luke laughed again. "I think Sean wanted to make a motorbike for his girlfriend. My father made one for a good friend of his who is, as far as I know, anyway, not my mother."

Re: Time for Role Play

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2006-10-23 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Blink, blink, blink. "As far as you know? I, mean to say, wouldn't she at least, know...?"

Re: Time for Role Play

[identity profile] tatooine-doofus.livejournal.com 2006-10-23 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"I haven't asked," Luke said. "My father had a different girlfriend when he was here, and she is definitely not my mother."

Re: Time for Role Play

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2006-10-23 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Parsing this with some difficulty, Evie came up with: "So your father made a motorbike for a friend-who-is-a-girl who might be your mother, but you didn't ask; but he had a girlfriend he did not make a motorbike for, who is definitely not your mother. And they both went to school here." She blinked. "Lord, I need a flowchart."

"I guess I shouldn't mention the part where I didn't know any of this before I came here then, huh?" Luke asked, smiling. "My life is more complicated that these shows."

Re: Time for Role Play

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2006-10-23 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh, heavens, yes. Vanessa Saturn would refuse to deal with this and go to the beach." Evie heard how that sounded and blushed. "Oh, heavens. I apologize, that was rude. The only complicated thing in *my* life is being here a century after I was born. This really is quite confusing."

Re: Time for Role Play

[identity profile] tatooine-doofus.livejournal.com 2006-10-23 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"I can imagine," Luke said sympathetically. "I mean, the technology's taken me some time to get used to, and I flew here in a spaceship. How are you adjusting?"

Re: Time for Role Play

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2006-10-23 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
"I quite like it here. It helps that I have a good roommate and a *very* helpful pretend-Big-Brother in Blair. He always explains things to me and tells me when I don't have to do what everyone else is." She turned bright red. "I made some rather embarassing mistakes my first few weeks here. But I've adjusted, really I have. Like Flight Club!" Evie nodded earnestly. "I've seen you there, haven't I?"

Re: Time for Role Play

[identity profile] tatooine-doofus.livejournal.com 2006-10-23 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Luke nodded enthusiastically. "It's one of my favorite times of the week," he said.

Re: Time for Role Play

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2006-10-23 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
"And you're from another planet? Are you an alien, or are you a human? Not that it matters," Evie said apologetically. "I'm just rather curious. Was it a very big spaceship? Or was it like the ones we've flown in Flight Club?"
