The Philosophy of Values: Period 3 - Class # 7 - 10/19
There were fresh fruits, melons, cheese, tea and cider for the students today. Wilson stood at the front of the desk, arms folded akimbo as he waited for everyone to come in and take their seats.
“Good morning,” he started.
“First off the bad news. I am not going to be giving back your tests today. This is because over half the class missed the test last week and while a few people have contacted me and provided for a full make up test, there are a few who have not contacted me at this time.”
He did not seem pleased.
“For those of you who contacted me with yourhandwavey excuse, please seem me after class to schedule your make up test between now and next Wednesdays. For those of you who have not contacted me with a handwavey excuse, you will also need to talk with me after class for the make up. The difference being, you will be docked half the points on the test to begin with.”
Exhaling he reached for his tea, this was obviously not something he’d looked forward to announcing.
“To avoid confusion, I will need to see the following students after class. Alanna, Hermione Granger, Draco Malfoy, Lyra Belacqua.” He had already spoken to Agnes Nitt.
Setting the tea down, Wilson moved towards the overhead projector.
Lecture:
“All right, today’s topic is the idea of humility vs arrogance but in thinking about and reading up on this lecture it came to me that perhaps verse is to black and white a term. There are times when it is important to carry one’s power with humility and grace and a time when a show of arrogance or if you rather, self-confidence can carry greater impact into a situation and in fact be used as a tool towards the end of a positive outcome for all parties.”
Laying a film on the projector, Wilson dimmed the lights.
“But it can be a very delicate balance.”
For the next half hour he lectured on the idea of Humility and on the idea of arrogance or pride touching briefly on Pride as one of the Seven Deadly Sins the lecture not designed to show one side as being better or worse than the other but rather as tools to use in applying values to a situation.
Class Participation:
“All right. For reading this week we went over The Tragedy of Othello. Today I’d like to talk about the role of humility and arrogance, or pride in Othello’s ultimate downfall. How Othello’s insecurity and his use of pride to overcome that insecurity lead to his tragedy. I’d like to discuss this, keeping in mind how pride or humility can affect how we apply ourselves and our gifts to the world around us. Do you hold back your gift out of a sense of true humility or because you’re afraid you might not be good enough to apply it? Or do you apply your gift with gusto to every challenging situation you encounter, regardless of the appropriateness of the situation?”
Homework:
“Homework this week is to read Romeo and Juliet and to be ready to discuss the idea of hope and despair and how they affect our ability to make sound judgements.”

Re: Class Participation
Walking around the desk, he reached into his soft sided briefcase and pulled out a little pad of paper. He scribbled upon one sheet, ripped it off, then scribbled upon a second sheet as well.
Wilson then carried both of these sheets up to where Willow sat and handed them to her, smiling kindly at her as he said softly.
"Shoo, take your flu and go. Write me a paper on the topic question to hand in next week if you feel up for it."
The two pieces of paper were slips off his script pad, on one was a note.
To Fandom Faculty,
Let this note serve as a medical excuse for Willow Rosenberg to miss classes on Thursday the 19th, Friday the 20th and Monday the 23rd due to an upper respiratory ailment.
Dr. James Wilson.
The second one was a list of OTC feel better stuffs.
Orange Juice
Water
Tylenol
Cough Suppresent -if necessary-
