Heroism, Humanism & Hijinks: Literature in Action - Week 6, Period 5

[OOC: Dummies' Guide]

"Good afternoon," Thursday greeted. "Keep the 24th of October free. It's a Tuesday, but this class will not run that day. You'll have a free period, then you're all to meet here after classes. We're going on a field trip. If there are any problems, or if you have an allergy to ink, be sure to let me know as soon as possible.

This week's novel is To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. The court room plays a large role in the novel, and as you would have seen can be quite a circus when the law is in motion. Today, this classroom is a court room." She gestured to how the room was set up. "We won't be covering anything as controversial as murder. I'll leave the controversy to the Ethics class. This case is straight-forward. The court is not.

I'll need volunteers for the following:

Four members of the Defence team who will defend the accused at all costs.
Four members of the Prosecution team who will prove the accused guilty at all costs.
A judge who will mediate the discussion and preside over the proceedings.
Seven members of the jury whose decision will be the final one.
Three witnesses who will play the Queen of Hearts, King of Hearts and the Knave of Hearts on the witness stand.

Then we have the accused. Mr Addy, you are hereby accused of stealing the Queen of Hearts' tarts.

The difference to this court is that Mr Addy can defend himself and anyone can ask questions that the Defence or Prosecution must then find ways to answer. Each side has evidence to interpret.

Enjoy."

[OOC: Pick a role, ask questions, mess with evidence and argue your case! You obviously don't have to participate, but if you don't intend to, just leave an OOC note saying so so people aren't waiting on you.]

My fortune said 'the game is nothing; the playing of it is everything.' I didn't play any literal games this week, but these things tend not to be all that literal anyhow. I *did* however try to get a straight answer out of a cat, argue someone out of bidding against me in an auction, and ask someone to a a dance. I lost on the first two and the third went quite well, for what it's worth, but I learned a lot from all three, which I'd say is the point. (What I learned was: 1) you don't want a straight answer out of a cat; the curvy ones are more fun. 2) Arguing with idiots can be fun to a point, but there's a time to cut your losses. 3) Making boys blush, on the other hand, is *never* not fun.)

My fortune said that someone I trusted would save me and that trust was necessary. To me that seemed fairly straightforward. I didn't really seem to run into anything I might need saving from, but when my boyfriend was turned into a panther I trusted that he'd turn back and he did. Also, as a panther he seemed to think I needed saving from any male I ran into and he did that quite well. I guess maybe that could have been what the witches meant or maybe there is still something that will happen.

My fortune said that fur will lead me to my fate. At first I thought that this had something to do with my Uncle Neelix who is furry and there was this incident when I was younger but that would take too long to describe here, but as I wasn't in contact with him throughout the week I ruled that option out. I'm not entirely sure what I was meant to be on the look out for regarding 'fur' but as I haven't yet experienced enlightenment to my fate I am willing to assume that whatever my destiny is meant to be hasn't been revealed yet and I have to continue to keep looking and be on the lookout for fur

The Witches told me that the skies would be important, and that they would fall on me. While the sky didn't literally fall on me, it did rain some, so I figured I ought to be careful when outside. I thought maybe the importance of the skies had to do with being tall, so I made sure to watch out for low doorframes and branches and ceilings. Nothing turned out to have much impact on me, and I have to wonder if it's because I successfully avoided any problems, or if maybe the Witches were too involved with looking up to talk to me when they gave me my fortune to think of anything better.

Conner turned in some handwavey rather rambly essay that had far more to do with soccer than it, by all rights, should.

I was told by the witches to be like a duck. Calm on the surface and paddling like mad beneath. Fortunately I didn't turn into a duck. I did however get some rather disturbing news, but tried not to let it show.

"Left to themselves, bad things tend to get worse" was my fortune. It's very true for me because this week Hikaru has been getting mad at Kaoru because we haven't talked about everything yet.

The witches said that I would live a long, healthy life. So I figured they were wrong or smoking something and decided to live my life exactly the same way I always do.

The witches told me, "Furious activity is no substitute for understanding." At first I didn't think it made much sense, but then I thought about it, and I think they meant I should think before I act, which I try to do, but sometimes fail at. So I have been trying to be less impulsive and employ more of a rational decision-making process.

The witches told me, "We are on a journey to keep an appointment with who we are." I still don't quite understand that, because I don't think that who I am has been decided yet, and therefore, there can't be an appointment for it. So, I've been living my life the same way I always do, and it's worked out rather well so far.
