Intro to 21st Century American Culture - Monday - Period Five

"Good afternoon, everyone," Lorelai greeted the class after everyone had entered and taken a seat. "I hope you all had a chance to do your homework and watch a sitcom this past week, though with all the excitement of Homecoming, I'd understand if you didn't."

She began a lecture on the history and various types of sitcoms.

"And in case some of you didn't have a chance to watch a sitcom, I'm going to show you some clips of a very popular show, Buddies."

Rachel on the plane to London, Rachel & Monica double date with some cute doctors they met at the hospital, and Monica sings at Mike's piano bar.

"Next week we're going to cover police and law dramas, so if you have a chance to catch one before then, please do. If not, I'll show you clips again next week."

Lorelai blinked a few times, not sure how to answer the question.

"Okay, why do you think he would think you were?" she decided was a good place to start.

"They were voting people for Princesses and Princes. I was one of the names they were voting on... so I hid in my room all weekend."

Gwynn lifted her chin proudly. "I am faithful to King Phillip and would never commit such an act of treason towards him."

"You were nominated for Homecoming Court?" Lorelai clarified.

"Yes, I was being voted on for some sort of court and it's just wrong, Ms. Lorelai. I could never presume so much and be a traitor to my king."

Lorelai smiled. "Gwynn, it definitely wasn't an act of treason. They weren't voting on real princes and princesses, it's just what they call them. It's basically just saying that people like you."

"If you like people, why vote them to a court when it could get them into trouble?"

"It wouldn't get them in trouble here," Lorelai explained. "We don't have a monarchy and we're not actually trying to give them any sort of ruling power."
