Ethics [Thursday, October 5, 6th period]

As usual, Vader stomped into the classroom exactly on time and slammed the door behind him.

The door was looking like it had seen better days.

"There was a rebel who was captured recently," Vader began, "who possessed knowledge about where the headquarters of her wrong-headed and illegal organization was hiding. After extensive interrogation--which is next week's lesson and not this one--it was decided that extreme measures must be taken to get her to reveal her information."

Vader paused, the only sound in the room his ventilation unit.

"So we destroyed her home planet from space."

Vader paced in front of his desk, his black cape sweeping out behind him. "Today's question is not 'was that excessive' because I don't care, but how far would you go in order to get what you want. This is different from the question earlier this semester. I do not want your emotions to play a part in your calculations. This isn't to save someone you love. This is to do your job, to salvage your pride, to make sure others know you being absolutely serious."

"As far as I needed to," Bel said. "But it kinda depends on the situation."

"There's a line," Seely replied. "Sometimes you don't know where it is until you have to make the decision to cross it or not, but it's there."

"A combination of what Bel and Seely said. I'd go as far as necessary, but I'd know when I hit an ethical line." I hopeAlanna added in her head.

"Always depends on the situation," Stark said. "Always. But making a point, trying to prove something...those are not reason to do something horrible. "

"There are limits. I just haven't been in a situation where I've had to push them yet," she said.

"If I really believed in the point, pretty far," Tyler said. "I like the dramatic gestures."

"Why is it important to make points?" River asked.

Rory shrugged. "There are others who make points. I'd rather be the one who cleans up after them and makes sure the public is aware of the lack of ethics behind those points."

"It would depend what was at stake... but there are lines you do not cross."

"Until I reached the line I believed was appropriate for the situation," said Elizabeth carefully.

"It depends on what point I'm trying to make," Sam said, feeling a bit uncomfortable about this discussion. It wasn't like blowing up a sun and shooting people she'd never met were much better than destroying a planet.

Aeryn knows this is going to be a twitchy subject for her and she's not exactly sure why, other than she was given the rebel's choice in class before. "You don't know exactly what's appropriate until the time comes," she says. "The really important thing is a sense of proportion."

[identity profile] krycek-rat.livejournal.com 2006-10-06 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
"It would depend on the point," Krycek said, shrugging. "You do what you have to do, and sometimes the methods aren't 'nice' but there's a choice on both sides and if you weren't forced to, those methods wouldn't be necessary in the first place."

"I don't really know," Zero said. "I've committed vandalism and breaking and entering in the past. But I'd stop short of murder."

"I would go as far as I had to, assuming that I followed orders enough from my superiors so that I would err on the side of 'not crimes against humanity' so I don't get incarcerated after the fact."

Jamie is sitting at his desk. Quietly. Not causing any trouble.

Though he is glaring at Vader with a nasty expression.

Stark was trying not to be obviously horrified by the idea of an entire planet's worth of lives being ended just to make someone talk. It was entirely possible he was failing at this.

Isabel spent the rest of the class wondering exactly how Vader was able to come up with a scenario that exactly mirrored what they had to do in real life. As far as she could tell there were two possible answers. One, he bribed the squirrels for transcripts of some of the private conversations she'd had with people. While it made an amusing picture she didn't quite believe it. The other, and she felt much more likely scenario, was that he was taking trips through students' heads.

Isabel waited till Vader was nearby and thought rather loudly in his direction, not certain if he would here it but it still made her feel better. Stay the hell out of my head.

River saw the planet blowing up and sensed Vader's emotions. That made her curl up and shake, and she slipped off her chair and hid under the table.
