Hunting 101 - Class 5 (Wednesday Period 7)

When the students came in, they found the usual set up, with a bunch of handouts sitting beside the sign in sheet.

"Good afternoon," John said to his students when everyone had taken their seats. "Today we're not going to be talking about ghosts or demons or any other kind of creature or entity. Today we're going to talk about curses. The handout gives a definition and a brief look at various types of curses.

"There's also some information some examples on some cursed objects for you to look over." John paused to give them a chance to read through the information.

"Not all cursed objects are like that. Some are very mild, the equivalent of a mosquito bite, something you could just overlook as a run of bad luck. Some are worse, deadlier. There are ways that are supposed to cleanse an object or place, to break the curse." John paused. "Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. As you read, there's a wide variety of the type of curses. To successfully break a curse you really need to know how it was cast and by whom. And sometimes, often, that information is difficult to come by. Especially with older items. In that case, when you can't find exactly the origin of a cursed item, the best thing you can do is get out of its way." He looked around the class meeting various students eyes. "If it's a piece of land that is cursed, you clear out and make sure anyone else there does as well.

"If it's a cursed object, try to handle it as little as possible. Silk, salt and iron can all make it safer to handle an object, but nothing will block every curse. You can try to destroy the object, but often that's not going to work. Your best bet is going to be put it somewhere it won't be handled, won't be a threat. Find a spot as far away from people as you can and bury it." He smiled grimly. "If you can't get out of its way, you get it out of yours."

John got up and paced the front of the room as he continued talking. "For the next class, I'm not going to lay out for you what you need to know and need to do. You're getting the exact same information that I usually have at the beginning of a hunt. In fact you already have it. That's the rest of those handouts. Your homework is to pair up and go over that information, and plan out what you're going to do next Wednesday. I'm available if you have any questions or want any advice, but you'll have to figure out what you're after on your own.

John smiled at them. "So you better get started."

[OOC: wait for OCD is up; go nuts :)]

"Well, that works out nicely then." Sam grinned and started flipping through the handouts. "Judging from the lecture, I think it's pretty safe to say the girls came into contact with something cursed, or maybe multiple somethings."

"Multiple somethings with the same effect? Is that even possible?"

"That's a good point. It's possible, but not really probable. So, maybe we're just dealing with one cursed object?"

"I'd guess so," Seely frowned. "You see anything here that might fit the bill?"

"There's nothing that immediately jumps out," Sam replied. "But it's got to be something in the dance studio. If the girls had been there together, then there could be a chance they got their hands on something from outside. But since they were each alone..." He shrugged.

"How about what it's not?" Seely asked. "Something which gets a lot of use would probably not be cursed."
likethegun: (i'm making my o rly? face)

"Yeah, or there would be a lot more than two girls hurt," Sam agreed.

"Maybe we should check to see if they received any new inventory before the first death?"

"That's a really good idea." Sam smirked at Seely, sounding impressed.

"Well, it's kinda like a Dixon Hill mystery," Seely said. "Just...with curses instead of stolen goods."

"I don't know who Dixon Hill is, so I'll just have to take your word for that," Sam replied.

"Doesn't anyone around this place read classic noir anymore?"
