Hunting 101 - Class 5 (Wednesday Period 7)

When the students came in, they found the usual set up, with a bunch of handouts sitting beside the sign in sheet.

"Good afternoon," John said to his students when everyone had taken their seats. "Today we're not going to be talking about ghosts or demons or any other kind of creature or entity. Today we're going to talk about curses. The handout gives a definition and a brief look at various types of curses.

"There's also some information some examples on some cursed objects for you to look over." John paused to give them a chance to read through the information.

"Not all cursed objects are like that. Some are very mild, the equivalent of a mosquito bite, something you could just overlook as a run of bad luck. Some are worse, deadlier. There are ways that are supposed to cleanse an object or place, to break the curse." John paused. "Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. As you read, there's a wide variety of the type of curses. To successfully break a curse you really need to know how it was cast and by whom. And sometimes, often, that information is difficult to come by. Especially with older items. In that case, when you can't find exactly the origin of a cursed item, the best thing you can do is get out of its way." He looked around the class meeting various students eyes. "If it's a piece of land that is cursed, you clear out and make sure anyone else there does as well.

"If it's a cursed object, try to handle it as little as possible. Silk, salt and iron can all make it safer to handle an object, but nothing will block every curse. You can try to destroy the object, but often that's not going to work. Your best bet is going to be put it somewhere it won't be handled, won't be a threat. Find a spot as far away from people as you can and bury it." He smiled grimly. "If you can't get out of its way, you get it out of yours."

John got up and paced the front of the room as he continued talking. "For the next class, I'm not going to lay out for you what you need to know and need to do. You're getting the exact same information that I usually have at the beginning of a hunt. In fact you already have it. That's the rest of those handouts. Your homework is to pair up and go over that information, and plan out what you're going to do next Wednesday. I'm available if you have any questions or want any advice, but you'll have to figure out what you're after on your own.

John smiled at them. "So you better get started."

[OOC: wait for OCD is up; go nuts :)]

As he waited for a partner, Alec glanced over the handouts and shook his head; this was some seriously weird stuff.

Will scanned the room, and headed over to the first free person she could see. "Hey. Have a partner yet?"

"Me?" Alec grinned. "I guess I do now. I think I've seen you around - I'm Alec."

"Nice to meet you. I'm Will," she answered. "I've been around here for almost a month now, so we've probably passed each other in a hallway somewhere."

"Yeah, must have," he agreed easily, smiling. "Amazing how many new people I'm still meeting, given it's not such a big school."

Glancing at the handouts, he sighed and gave Will a hopeful look. "Don't suppose you know much about this kind of thing?"

Dean raised an eyebrow at the articles, blinking at the general lack of helpful information. Crap.

He looked around for someone to partner with, who was hopefully better at this than he was.

Dean went up to John looking apprehensive. He seemed to be doing that more than he would have liked, lately. "I'm really sorry I missed your office hours last week, sir, but uh. I had a lot of other classes to catch up on too, and I did get the handout and did some reading and." He cut himself off, realizing it sounded like he was making excuses. Which maybe he was. "I'm pretty okay with shotguns; I've been to ranges before with my dad. So I think if you wanted me to try that practical, I could do it."
