Hunting 101 - Class 5 (Wednesday Period 7)

When the students came in, they found the usual set up, with a bunch of handouts sitting beside the sign in sheet.

"Good afternoon," John said to his students when everyone had taken their seats. "Today we're not going to be talking about ghosts or demons or any other kind of creature or entity. Today we're going to talk about curses. The handout gives a definition and a brief look at various types of curses.

"There's also some information some examples on some cursed objects for you to look over." John paused to give them a chance to read through the information.

"Not all cursed objects are like that. Some are very mild, the equivalent of a mosquito bite, something you could just overlook as a run of bad luck. Some are worse, deadlier. There are ways that are supposed to cleanse an object or place, to break the curse." John paused. "Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. As you read, there's a wide variety of the type of curses. To successfully break a curse you really need to know how it was cast and by whom. And sometimes, often, that information is difficult to come by. Especially with older items. In that case, when you can't find exactly the origin of a cursed item, the best thing you can do is get out of its way." He looked around the class meeting various students eyes. "If it's a piece of land that is cursed, you clear out and make sure anyone else there does as well.

"If it's a cursed object, try to handle it as little as possible. Silk, salt and iron can all make it safer to handle an object, but nothing will block every curse. You can try to destroy the object, but often that's not going to work. Your best bet is going to be put it somewhere it won't be handled, won't be a threat. Find a spot as far away from people as you can and bury it." He smiled grimly. "If you can't get out of its way, you get it out of yours."

John got up and paced the front of the room as he continued talking. "For the next class, I'm not going to lay out for you what you need to know and need to do. You're getting the exact same information that I usually have at the beginning of a hunt. In fact you already have it. That's the rest of those handouts. Your homework is to pair up and go over that information, and plan out what you're going to do next Wednesday. I'm available if you have any questions or want any advice, but you'll have to figure out what you're after on your own.

John smiled at them. "So you better get started."

[OOC: wait for OCD is up; go nuts :)]

"Hey, Peter." John nods towards the handouts. "Wanna give this a go?"

"Certainly," Peter replied with a nod. "What do you think?"

"Well, just reading the articles make me think something's funny at the dance studio. Not to be cliche but maybe it's buried on top of an ancient Indian burial ground," John says.

Peter considered. "Wouldn't that curse rebound upon the owners of the studio? If it was logically done, at least?"

"Good point," John agrees. "What about what they were wearing? Could they have been wearing a similar item?"

"Some sort of cursed locket or red shoes or something perhaps?" Peter replied, making a note on his paper. "I wonder if there's any information on that in the articles."

John checks the article. "There's no specific mention of anything they were wearing. So, I'd say keep the option open. What about an accessory in the studio? A chair or mirrors?"

"Do we have to be looking for an object?" Peter pointed out. "Perhaps there was another girl who was jealous of these two. Maybe they got roles in a ballet or something that another girl wanted?"

"Huh." Could be true. "Poisoning, maybe?"

"Like she slipped poison into their water bottles?" Peter said. "That's pretty harsh."

"Well, the article says their hearts just gave out." He reads the article again just to make sure. "So, something had to get into their bodies and kill them."

"Though I suppose the magic of the curse could," Peter replied. "Since Mr. Winchester seems to think that this is a supernatural occurrence."

Re: Research assignment

"So..." He pauses to think. "We're possibly looking for a cursed item or a person who cursed both girls?"

Re: Research assignment

[identity profile] once-a-king.livejournal.com 2006-10-04 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
"Or perhaps a situation that they wandered into that triggered a curse?" Peter suggested. "So we need to see if there's anything in specific that links these two girls. Beyond the dancing and the studio, I suppose?"

Re: Research assignment

[identity profile] whitedeathpod.livejournal.com 2006-10-04 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah. The article doesn't really give us much to go on," John says. "They're both dancers, they danced at the same studio, both girls, both alone. So, basically, we need to be really prepared."

"And figure out what we need to do to break a curse," Peter replied. "Fairy tales generally say you have to destroyed the curses object. But if it's a person cursing? I doubt we're suppose to destroy her."

"Yeah. And if she's cursed, there's gotta be a way to de-curse her, so to speak."
